Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes - Digital Deluxe Edition

I went into Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes half-expecting a nostalgia trap, the kind of Kickstarter project that mistakes reverence for design. What I found was something more honest than that, and occasionally more frustrating. This is a game made by people who genuinely loved Suikoden II, directed by its creator Yoshitaka Murayama, and it shows in both the best and worst ways. The core loop is classic JRPG: you play as Nowa, a young recruit swept into a continent-spanning conflict between nations, and your job is to build an alliance one hero at a time. The recruitment hook is the real engine here. With over 120 characters to find, each with their own joining condition and backstory, the world of Allraan rewards exploration in a way that feels earned rather than checklist-driven. Some heroes join without a fuss; others want favors, rare items, or proof you have been paying attention to the world around you. The character writing is warm and specific enough that even the weirder additions to your roster feel like people rather than roster filler. Combat runs on a front-row and back-row formation system where you field six fighters per battle. Each character's attack range, physical attribute type (Slash, Thrust, Smash, Grapple, or Throw), and rune-lens loadout all feed into how you build your party. Equipping rune-lenses unlocks unique abilities, stat bonuses, and magic access, and because each of the 100-plus heroes has a distinct slot progression, theorycrafting your party actually means something. Hero Combo attacks, which chain specific characters together for powerful joint moves, add a layer of roster synergy that makes swapping in new recruits feel exciting rather than tedious. The catch is that regular combat leans on the simpler side, and a few critics noted that fights can feel repetitive in the long middle stretch. Boss encounters help break that rhythm with per-fight gimmick mechanics, such as using environmental cover or timing attacks around enemy patterns, but these flourishes are unevenly distributed. Some players also flagged menu slowness and healing balance as genuine friction points, and those complaints have merit. Where the game absolutely holds up is presentation and pacing of discovery. The 2D sprites-on-3D-backgrounds art style looks clean, and the lighting work in particular gives scenes a painterly quality you do not often see in this subgenre. The score does real work supporting dramatic moments. The slow-burn opening, which takes its time before throwing you into the deep end of the war plot, will test your patience if you are used to modern JRPGs that front-load the stakes. But players willing to sit with it report that the payoff, both narratively and in terms of base-building and party variety, makes the investment worthwhile. A full playthrough hunting down recruits and experimenting with party compositions can reach fifty hours or more. The Digital Deluxe Edition bundles additional content alongside the base game, making it the version to consider if you plan to go all-in. Eiyuden Chronicle is not reinventing the turn-based JRPG wheel. It is making a specific, confident argument that the wheel did not need reinventing, just a new coat of paint and a writer who cares about his characters. For genre fans, that argument lands. For players hoping for deep mechanical evolution, manage expectations accordingly.
