The legendary brawler is back after 26 years, packing four-player couch co-op, a roster of 21 characters, and combat that rewards combos over button-mashing.

Streets of Rage 4 is a side-scrolling beat-em-up developed by DotEmu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games - the same crew behind the gorgeous Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap remake. It picks up ten years after Streets of Rage 3, sending Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, Cherry Hunter, and cybernetic newcomer Floyd Iraia through 12 stages of Wood Oak City to take down the Y Twins, the kids of the original series villain Mr. X. Each stage ends with a boss fight, and clearing Story Mode unlocks Stage Select, Arcade Mode (one token, no continues), Boss Rush, and a competitive Battle Mode for two players. The combat here is not the same old button-mashing formula. Guard Crush Games brought their fighting-game chops to the table: you get ground combos, Blitz attacks (forward-forward-attack), aerial specials that cost health but recover it on follow-up hits, Star Moves that nuke the screen, and a juggle and wall-bounce system that lets you chain together genuinely creative beatdowns. Axel is the slow powerhouse, Blaze is a combo-focused technician, Cherry is a five-star speed demon who swings a guitar, and Floyd's long-range grapple makes him feel absolutely brutal in a crowd. Each character plays differently enough that replaying stages with a new pick feels fresh rather than mechanical. The lifetime score system also drip-feeds unlockable 16-bit retro characters from all three original games, which is a clever reason to keep going after credits roll. For the couch co-op crowd - and yes, this IS the couch co-op crowd question - the answer is a very enthusiastic yes. Four-player local co-op works across both Story Mode and the Survival Mode added by the Mr. X Nightmare DLC, and the chaos of four characters juggling enemies around the same screen is exactly the kind of joyful mess you want on a Saturday night. Online is capped at two players with co-op or versus options, which is the main caveat. A March 2023 patch even added a dedicated Co-op Attack move where one player grabs and throws their partner into enemies, which is as ridiculous as it sounds and should be on your highlight reel. On the accessibility front, five difficulty settings cover everything from newcomers to masochists, and dying mid-run lets you buy a continue at the cost of halving your score - so casual players can see the whole game without a wall-punching amount of friction. The one genuine gripe that surfaces consistently: the base campaign runs around three to four hours, and some characters - particularly a few of the heavier fighters - can feel sluggish when cheaper enemy attacks chain-stun you with little recourse. The Mr. X Nightmare DLC adds Max Thunder, Shiva, Estel Aguirre, and a meaty Survival wave mode that extends replayability considerably, so if you are buying in now, grabbing the DLC alongside the base game is worth considering. The hand-drawn comic-book art is genuinely gorgeous, and the soundtrack - featuring original composer Yuzo Koshiro - is a proper banger from start to finish. You can even swap to a retro audio mode with tracks from the Mega Drive originals, which is a small but lovely touch. If you have any fondness for the classic trilogy, or if Castle Crashers and Scott Pilgrim ever made your living room erupt, this is the game for your next group session. Riley, Scout Team
