Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Deluxe Edition
A grimdark CRPG that rewards lore-curious players with 100-plus hours of genuinely compelling narrative, but demands patience with its steep mechanical learning curve and launch-era bugs.
Veredicto de GamerScout
Best for CRPG veterans who want 100-plus hours of grimdark moral complexity and are willing to read every tooltip twice.

Acerca de Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Deluxe Edition
I went into Rogue Trader knowing almost nothing about the 40K universe and came out the other side having read more tooltips than a person reasonably should - and still wanting more. Owlcat's take on the Warhammer 40,000 setting is an isometric, turn-based CRPG built on a d100 tabletop ruleset, where you inherit the title of Rogue Trader von Valancius under thoroughly murderous circumstances and spend the next hundred-plus hours carving out a dynasty in the lawless Koronus Expanse. That premise alone is catnip for anyone who has ever wanted a CRPG with genuine political weight and a universe that does not bend to make you feel heroic. The writing is where Rogue Trader earns its keep. The Koronus Expanse is a place where every faction - the Imperium, pirate clans, Xenos interests - has a competing claim, and the game rarely lets you feel clean about your choices. Moral decisions here do not sort neatly into light-side and dark-side columns; they carry the grimdark logic of a universe that has been dying for ten thousand years. Companion writing is a genuine highlight: characters are layered, their backstories grow in surprising directions, and the dialogue rewards careful reading rather than skipping. If you are the kind of player who re-reads terminal entries and journals in RPGs, you will be occupied for a very long time. The class system deserves real attention. Rather than a traditional class picker, the game uses an Origin-and-Doctrine structure, where your starting background sets your stats and talents, and Archetypes provide the core combat identity, which then branch into advanced subclasses and Exemplar paths. Whether you are running an Officer barking commands with abilities like Bring It Down to grant bonus actions, or a Bounty Hunter exploiting the Prey mechanic for extra turns, the six-character party system rewards deliberate planning. Burst Fire builds, cover positioning with visible line-of-sight previews before you even move, Veil Degradation management - there are enough interlocking systems here to sustain multiple playthroughs at different build angles. The catch is that the mechanical complexity can cross into obtuse territory. Some abilities chain so many conditional effects that you are following hyperlinks inside tooltips just to understand what a single button press does. Newcomers to the CRPG genre will find it overwhelming; returning Owlcat veterans will feel right at home. The honest caveat - and you should know this before buying - is that the launch version was rough. Bugs, broken cutscenes, unreliable tooltips in combat, and sluggish load times were widespread criticisms at release. The good news is that post-launch patches and the Void Shadows DLC have meaningfully improved stability, and reviewers who returned after those updates reported a markedly smoother experience. The Lex Imperialis DLC has since expanded the game further. Ship-based combat exists as a secondary layer, though community consensus is that it feels thinner than the ground game - a satisfying flavour addition rather than a core pillar. The voidship upgrade system, however, works as a satisfying home-base progression loop that ties the scope of your dynasty to tangible mechanical benefits. Rogue Trader is the rare 40K game that takes the setting seriously as a canvas for moral complexity rather than just a backdrop for bolter fire. It has rough edges that Owlcat's patches have smoothed but not entirely sanded away. For players who want a dense, text-heavy CRPG with a universe that expands the deeper you read and a class system that still offers new angles at hour 80, this is one of the most ambitious entries the genre has seen since Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. Casual RPG players looking for something breezy should look elsewhere. Everyone else: clear your schedule.
