Grimdark co-op carnage done right, with some serious post-launch scars that Fatshark has spent years patching over - buy it now and you inherit all those fixes for free.

I'll be blunt: I came to Darktide late, deliberately, because the launch-window discourse was a horror show. Performance crashes, glacial progression, a cosmetics shop that felt more confident than the actual content - the game practically begged you to wait. Here in 2026, that wait has been repaid with interest. What you are buying now is a substantially different, better-supported product than what shipped in November 2022, and the Imperial Edition bundles in cosmetic currency that softens the sting of that in-app purchase ecosystem. At its core this is a four-player co-op horde shooter set inside the grimdark hive city of Tertium, which is under siege by Nurgle-corrupted Chaos forces. Think Left 4 Dead rebuilt in the 41st Millennium, with a heavier melee lean than you might expect from something billing itself as a shooter. The original four classes - Veteran (Sharpshooter support), Zealot (melee DPS), Ogryn (tank), and Psyker (ranged warp-blaster) - have since been joined by the Arbitrator, who brings a riot shield, a Cyber-Mastiff companion, and a law-enforcement fantasy that goes surprisingly hard; the Hive Scum, the only class that can dual-wield shivs and autopistols while cooking custom combat stimulants; and the freshly released Skitarii, a Mechanicus cyborg operative backed by a Servo-Skull. Seven classes is a genuine roster, and the overhauled talent trees give each one real build depth - tinkerers can chase esoteric synergies while more casual players can follow clearly signposted paths down to satisfying keystones. Combat is where Darktide earns every hour you give it. The melee feels physically convincing in a way that is hard to articulate without sounding like a press release, so I will put it plainly: chainsword swings have consequence, and the push-block-into-overhead rhythm against a horde of Poxwalkers is one of the better combat loops in the genre. The shield system - one regenerating toughness bar, one permanent health bar - forces you off the wall and into the scrum to recover, which is a smart design choice that keeps four-player coordination feeling mandatory rather than optional. At higher difficulties, an Ogryn not managing aggro while your Psyker channels a warp charge is the difference between extraction and a wipe. The honest criticisms have not fully evaporated with patches. Mission variety is better than launch but the objective types (scan, deliver, purge) still cycle visibly, and the environments, while visually stunning in their grim industrial gothic scale, can blur together across a long session. The narrative is deliberately threadbare - your convict-turned-Inquisitorial asset has a backstory shaped by character creation prompts, but the story never builds to anything with real dramatic weight. For an RPG specialist like me, that is the ache. The bones of a great character drama are here: the voiced banter between a sanctioned Psyker and a Zealot who openly distrusts her reads as authentic 40K lore-play, but it serves flavour rather than plot consequence. If you come for Disco Elysium-tier narrative payoff, look elsewhere. If you come for the satisfaction of executing a perfectly-timed grenade stagger into a Rager swarm while your Veteran picks off the Scab Sniper behind it, Darktide delivers repeatedly. The Imperial Edition specifically adds cosmetic-shop currency and some exclusive cosmetics. The underlying game is the same - and community consensus is clear that the edition is only worth the premium over standard if cosmetics matter to you. What matters more is that post-launch updates have added at least eight new maps, new game modes including Mortis Trials, weapons like the Power Falchion and Plasma Gunner archetypes, and multiple enemy variants. The game has grown. It is still not a narrative RPG, it is not a build-variety sandbox on the level of Path of Exile, and the filler-mission grind to unlock higher difficulties remains a low point. But as a co-op action game with genuine moment-to-moment thrill and a roster that keeps expanding, it earns a genuine recommendation - especially now, when you are joining a patched, populated game rather than a chaotic early-access situation wearing a full-price tag. Veredicto de GamerScout

Best for co-op FPS fans who want build depth and brutal horde combat and can forgive a thin story and repetitive mission objectives.
