Urbek's city-planning puzzle gets a threat layer bolted on, but the thin review sample and mixed reception suggest it's for committed base-game fans only.

I've spent enough time colour-coding resource chains in Urbek City Builder to know exactly what its rhythm feels like: a slow, deliberate puzzle where every building placement ripples through your food, work, and happiness loops. The base game earns its Very Positive rating by stripping money out of the equation entirely and making you think in supply chains instead. Defend the City, released as a DLC expansion in March 2023, tries to add urgency to that calm by introducing enemy bombardment and a new mountains biome, and it partially succeeds, though not without friction. The core addition is a military layer. You build defensive facilities, extend their range outward, and hope your coverage keeps pace with escalating attack waves that grow stronger over time. On paper that sounds like a compelling pressure valve for a genre that can sometimes turn placid once your resource loops stabilise. In practice, the execution is uneven. The mountains biome introduces a food-scarcity constraint, since feeding a population in a frozen environment forces tighter farming chains, and the ski slope tourism mechanic is a genuinely clever offset. But the defence building itself feels more like a checkbox obligation than a strategic system with meaningful decisions. You place towers, you expand coverage, you survive. The depth that makes the base game's neighbourhood planning so satisfying, that puzzle-like quality where relocating a single farm can cascade through three production chains, does not carry over fully into the combat layer. What the DLC does preserve is Urbek's fundamental appeal: the micromanagement of building proximity and resource function that makes it play more like a spatial puzzle than a conventional city builder. If you have already mastered the nightlife district versus industrial district trade-offs, and you want a reason to rebuild from scratch under pressure, the mountains biome alone provides a meaningfully different starting constraint. The food-work cycle becomes much tighter when your terrain works against you, and that forces smarter early build orders. Veterans who have already optimised their way to a comfortable late-game metropolis will find the reset genuinely challenging. The honest concern is the reception. With only 11 user reviews at a Mixed 63% positive rating at the time of writing, there is not enough community signal to call this a confident purchase. Several players report that the defence mechanics feel superficial relative to the price of admission, and that the mountains biome content alone might not justify the add-on cost for casual fans of the base game. If you are new to Urbek entirely, start with the base game first, its tutorial is one of the better onboarding sequences in the indie city-builder space, walking you from a lumber camp to a sprawling urban grid without overwhelming you. Come back to Defend the City once you understand why your food chain collapsed at 5,000 population. Diego, Scout Team

Veredicto de GamerScout

A focused DLC for committed Urbek veterans; too thin on defensive depth to justify the buy for anyone still learning the base game.
