The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III - Consumable Value Set

I will be blunt with anyone landing on this page fresh: if you have not played Trails of Cold Steel I and II, close this tab, go buy those, and come back in three months. Cold Steel III is the third chapter of a four-part arc inside a franchise that has been building its world for over a decade, and Nihon Falcom treats your prior investment as a given. The built-in story recap is a kind gesture, but it is a Cliff Notes version of a novel series, not a replacement for living through it. For those of you who have done the work, however, this is where the Cold Steel arc finally starts cashing cheques it has been writing since day one. The structural conceit is clever and emotionally satisfying. Rean Schwarzer, formerly the student protagonist, has graduated and taken a posting as an instructor at a new Thors Branch Campus, a school explicitly for misfits and political inconveniences. That role reversal does real narrative work. Watching Rean mentor a new Class VII, while the original cast filters back in with lives visibly changed by the civil war of the previous game, creates the kind of layered character payoff that Trails fans live for. New student Juna, a former Crossbell police cadet, brings a personal and politically charged perspective to Erebonia's expansionist behavior that the earlier games rarely had the space to explore. Not every new face lands with equal force, but the additions generally strengthen rather than dilute the ensemble. The combat system received a meaningful upgrade this time around. The series' signature AT (Action Time) turn-order bar is still the tactical foundation, letting you read upcoming turns and plan accordingly. Layered on top is the Break gauge, a secondary bar on enemies that, when depleted through targeted elemental arts or physical pressure, leaves them vulnerable and triggers follow-up strikes from your linked partner. The catch, and it is a genuine catch, is that bosses often enter an Enhanced state after being broken, so the decision of when to commit becomes a small puzzle of its own. Brave Orders are the other major addition: spending pooled Brave Points to issue party-wide commands that grant effects like temporary invincibility or attack buffs. Equipping two Master Quartz simultaneously, each defining a character's elemental affinities and passive bonuses, opens up real build variety in a way the earlier games only hinted at. Juna's dual Striker and Gunner modes, toggling between single-target melee and multi-target ranged attacks, are a good example of how the new character designs carry mechanical identity rather than just aesthetic distinction. The weaknesses are real and worth naming. The pacing is a problem, especially in the first third, where the school calendar structure encourages a lot of mandatory town-hopping and sidequests that range from meaningful character moments to fetch-quest filler. The voice acting coverage is uneven, with scenes that begin fully voiced and then go silent mid-conversation, which breaks immersion more than silence would have. The visual presentation was already showing its age on consoles; the PC port does not transform that situation, though the performance gains at higher resolutions help. Fans also correctly note that the narrative does not fully resolve, and instead feeds directly into Cold Steel IV. Treat this as the first half of a two-part finale, not a standalone story, and your expectations will land in the right place. For Trails veterans who have stayed the course, Cold Steel III is where years of accumulated attachment to this world start to pay serious dividends. The late chapters deliver escalation and revelations that genuinely earn the series' reputation for long-burn storytelling. For everyone else, the entry point conversation has to happen before the purchase conversation.
