The strategy game that Civilization fans have been mourning the spiritual loss of for 25 years - both the base game and Alien Crossfire expansion, pre-patched and bundled, for nearly nothing.

I cover shooters for a living, so when the Scout Team drops a 1999 turn-based 4X on my desk, I pay attention in a different way - I ask whether it still holds up as something worth loading in 2024, or whether it's a nostalgia relic being sold on a famous name. Alpha Centauri is neither a relic nor a nostalgia trap. It is one of the most densely designed strategy games ever shipped, and the Planetary Pack bundles both the original and the Alien Crossfire expansion together in a pre-patched state. That alone is worth flagging for anyone who has tried to get this running from an old disc. The core game drops seven ideological factions onto the planet Chiron after a colony ship fractures on arrival. You pick a faction - the militaristic Spartans, the research-obsessed University, the corporate Morgan Industries, the authoritarian Human Hive, and others - and each plays genuinely differently. The Spartan Federation gets morale bonuses and cheap prototype units but eats a production penalty; Morgan Industries generates energy but can't sustain large armies. Social Engineering adds another layer on top of faction identity, letting you dial government type, economy model, and values independently, producing a massive matrix of playstyle combinations. The custom unit workshop - pick chassis, weapon, armor, reactor, and special abilities from dozens of options - was ahead of its time and remains satisfying. Psi Combat against native mindworms operates on morale and surprise rather than raw stats, which keeps things from collapsing into a pure numbers race. Alien Crossfire brings in seven more factions, including the two alien Progenitor races - the Manifold Caretakers and the Manifold Usurpers - who start with planet surface scans and powerful Battle Ogres, and who can achieve a unique Progenitor Victory by completing the Resonance Communicator. The Nautilus Pirates get early sea bonuses and free shipyards. The Cybernetic Consciousness trades growth for research speed. The community is split on whether the expansion improves the game or dilutes the tighter narrative of the original, and honestly both camps have a point. The new factions are somewhat less fleshed-out in their writing than the original seven, and a few feel mechanically overpowered, particularly the aliens. But the pack lets you mix and match factions freely, so you can run a pure original-faction game while still launching from the expanded executable and getting all the additional technologies and secret projects. Here is where I have to be straight with you. The AI has always been exploitable - laser speeders remain a notorious early-game steamroll option, and the Thinker mod exists for a reason. The interface has aged visibly, the resolution options are painful on a modern monitor without a patch or wrapper, and multiplayer via TCP/IP is a relic that requires workarounds in 2024. If you are coming in blind expecting modern UX, expect friction. The depth is real, but so is the on-ramp. The writing, voice acting, and technology quote system - rival factions quoting philosophers and scientists as you research new nodes - still set a standard that most modern 4X games do not touch. Civilization: Beyond Earth had better graphics and worse everything else. For a strategy player willing to invest in learning the systems, this is an unrepeated experience. For a shooter brain looking for something between ranked queues, it is a time sink that will absolutely wreck your sleep schedule in a different way than Apex does. Fred, Scout Team
