Géneros: Massively Multiplayer, RPG, Free To Play.

Twenty-plus years of Gielinor and it still pulls you back in. A classless MMORPG with 29 skills, lore-dense quests, and a combat system that rewards the players willing to actually read the ability bar tooltips.

I have a complicated relationship with RuneScape, and I think that's the only honest way to start this. On the surface it looks like a casual free-to-play timesink, and for a certain kind of player it absolutely is. But spend a few real hours with it and the machinery underneath starts showing: 29 distinct skills to train across gathering, processing, and combat disciplines, a Grand Exchange player market that functions like a living economic simulation, and a quest log that stretches from breezy introductory adventures all the way up to multi-part story arcs involving warring gods and ancient Dragonkin lore. The writing in the higher-tier quests genuinely surprises. Jagex treats its questlines as proper narrative chapters, complete with callbacks, returning characters, and consequences that ripple forward into later content. The combat system is where things get interesting and occasionally frustrating for newcomers. After the Evolution of Combat overhaul, RuneScape moved from a purely passive click-to-attack model to an ability-bar setup with three styles: Melee, Ranged, and Magic, each governed by the combat triangle. Managing adrenaline, chaining abilities in the right order, and knowing when to weapon-switch during multi-phase boss encounters is genuinely tactical once you are past the tutorial zone. The endgame boss fights, in particular, demand precise timing and solid mechanical awareness. It is not the brainless clicking game its decade-old reputation implies. That said, the path from beginner to competent fighter is long and not especially well sign-posted. The game's UI is customisable to a fault, which is powerful but deeply intimidating on first launch. The free-to-play tier gives you a real taste of the world but walls off a significant portion of the quest catalogue and skills behind membership. That membership paywall is the most legitimate criticism of the current game, and it sits alongside broader community frustration about microtransactions layered on top of a subscription model. The Ironman Mode, which cuts off the Grand Exchange and player trading to force self-sufficiency, is one of the smartest things Jagex has ever added for players who want the grind to feel earned rather than purchased. The newer Group Ironman variant, allowing up to five friends to tackle that same challenge cooperatively with shared Group Storage, pushes the social dimension in a direction that actually complements the design rather than undermining it. For players who care about worldbuilding and narrative payoff, the Sixth Age storyline, deity politics, and Archaeology skill lore are legitimately rich territory. The Archaeology system in particular, which has you piecing together Dragonkin and Elder God history through artefacts and dig sites, scratches an itch that most MMOs don't even know exists. Filler quests do exist, mostly in the lower tiers, and the XP grind to access the story content you actually want can feel padded. But the ceiling on this game is genuinely high, and the community, despite its rough edges, has kept Gielinor alive and debated for over two decades. If you go in expecting a modern AAA RPG experience you will bounce off it fast. If you go in curious and patient, the world has an unusual density of things worth caring about. Monika, Scout Team
