At its structural core, Pacific Drive runs on a loop of scavenging runs into a supernatural version of the Pacific Northwest, hauling loot back to your garage base, repairing and upgrading your wagon, then heading out again. The garage is the heart of the game: you're welding on armor panels, swapping out engines, bolting new modules to the roof rack, and managing a growing list of vehicle quirks that behave somewhere between mechanical failure and haunted-car mythology. It sounds like a lot because it is a lot, and the game is genuinely obtuse in its early hours. The good news is that difficulty sliders are extensive and can be changed mid-run, so if the resource juggling starts feeling punishing rather than fun, you have real tools to dial it back. The Whispers in the Woods expansion shakes things up in ways the base game alone doesn't. The new Whispering Woods area introduces Artifacts - items found at strange altars that apply reality-warping effects to your environment and your car. There's also a creeping corruption mechanic tied to how long you linger in the woods, and surviving it requires fitting specially attuned parts to your wagon. Managing two separate resource tracks (regular and attuned) is the expansion's most annoying friction point, and upgrading your pneumatic lockers early is genuinely important if you don't want inventory headaches. The new story features a fully voiced cast and a new faction of anomaly-obsessed fanatics, and the writing quality is a step up from the base game's slower narrative pacing. Here's the honest durability check, though: Pacific Drive is strictly solo, strictly first-person, strictly PC here, and there is no co-op, no split-screen, no "pass the controller" moment to be had. If you're hunting something to run with three friends on a Saturday night, look elsewhere. This one is for the player who wants a quiet, creepy, deeply personal road trip through a hostile supernatural wilderness. The Metacritic critic average sits at 79, and that feels about right - critics broadly loved the atmosphere and vehicle crafting but flagged the mid-game repetition and occasionally opaque systems. Those criticisms still stand. But the Whispers Edition's added content meaningfully extends the game's best qualities and gives returning players a genuine reason to come back with fresh mechanics. For someone jumping in cold, this is the definitive version of a game that was already worth your time.
