My first reaction to Hex Gambit: Respawned was mild suspicion. Anything pitched as a digital board game with cross-platform online tends to mean a shallow mobile port dressed up for PC. That suspicion mostly dissolved within a few matches. The core is clean and mean: race to 10 victory points by eliminating enemy minions or sending units to tap the opponent's pillar, with each side getting exactly 3 action points per turn. That AP ceiling forces you to think about tempo the same way you would in a tight round-based shooter - every point spent on offense is a point not spent on defense, and a single bad turn can flip the board hard. The unit roster is the most interesting part of the design. You are not picking your squad - the game assigns minions based on which of the 10 captains you choose, and that is a genuine point of friction for anyone who likes to theorycraft a loadout. What you get instead is a pre-baked asymmetry between captains, each bringing a different spread of troops and a unique gambit ability you can activate a limited number of times per match. Captain Abacus, for example, lets you reset a minion to full health, which sounds minor until a fully refreshed Brute walks up and one-shots something important. The minions themselves have distinct stat lines: Runners sit at 3 HP and move fast, Brutes cap out at 8 HP and charge a smash that clears most units in a single hit, and the charge-based cooldown system on abilities means you are always managing a short clock. The crowdsurfing movement mechanic - where minions can hop over allies and enemies to reach tiles further away - is the one truly fresh idea, and it makes positioning feel less static than traditional hex-grid tactics. The multiplayer is where the game justifies the install. Matches run 15 to 25 minutes, cross-platform matchmaking is in, there are both Free For All and 2v2 modes, and private lobbies exist for friend groups. The online does not ship with skill-based matchmaking, which the developer confirmed was cut before launch, so queue quality is unpredictable. The 21-stage solo campaign against the Hex Royale AI works as a training ground across seven map themes and is fine without being deep. There is no real narrative to anchor you to it. The AI at higher difficulties will punish sloppy pillar defense, which is useful practice, but it lacks the read-and-react pressure that a human opponent creates in the 2v2 format. The main complaint that surfaces everywhere is the locked roster. You cannot build your own minion team outside the captain framework, which means your strategic identity comes from captain selection and in-match decision-making rather than pre-game construction. For players who want a pre-match draft or deck-build phase, that absence feels like a missing layer. Medallions earned through play unlock additional captains and maps, so there is a progression loop, but it is not deep enough to sustain solo grinding for long.
