IllFonic's licensed asymmetric 4v1 is more fun than it has any right to be, especially now that all four DLC drops ship in the box. Casual-accessible but thin on long-term depth.

I'll be straight with you: when a licensed asymmetric multiplayer from the studio behind Predator: Hunting Grounds lands on my desk, my first instinct is to clock out early. IllFonic has a pattern of shipping a solid core loop wrapped around a content skeleton, and Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed follows that formula closely enough to clock it from a mile out. The surprise is that the core loop here is genuinely good, maybe their best. The setup is 4v1 hide-and-seek. Four Ghostbusters play first-person, armed with Proton Packs, PKE Meters, and Ghost Traps, working to tether and trap a single player-controlled ghost before it fills a haunt meter by spooking civilians, possessing objects, and stashing rifts around the map. The ghost plays third-person, which is the right call - you need that wider view to survive four people sweeping toward you. Trap mechanics have a satisfying back-and-forth: proton packs overheat if you hold a tether too long, the ghost can snap free, and there is a last-chance escape window even after you are fully in the trap. The counterplay feels deliberate rather than accidental. On the Buster side, you build toward a role: stack PKE meter upgrades to become the team's scout, or spec your tether for drag control and become the anchor. It is not deep by any stretch, but it creates enough identity that sessions with a coordinated group stay interesting past the first hour. The Ecto Edition bundles all four 2023 DLC drops at no additional gate, adding ghost types, maps, cosmetics, and a Halloween-themed mini-campaign as level-unlocked content. That is a meaningful volume increase over launch, where the single-mode structure and thin cosmetic ladder drew legitimate criticism. Nine ghost types are now in the pool, each with variants that shift how haunting plays out - Poltergeists play differently from possession-focused classes, and that variety on the spectral side is the game's strongest point. The Buster side remains the weaker of the two; progression gives you gear mods and cosmetics, but nothing that fundamentally changes how a round feels past a certain level. Crossplay is active across PC and Xbox, which keeps matchmaking workable even at this point post-launch. The problems are real and worth knowing. Bot AI - both as ghost and as buster teammates - is embarrassingly poor. A bot buster will pick up your trap the moment a ghost is in range. A bot ghost is passive enough that solo runs feel hollow. This is a game that needs human players in all five slots to function, and if your group is not available, the offline experience buckles fast. There are also minor technical bugs across cutscenes and occasional map geometry that the ghost can exploit more than the developers intended. Balance patches have addressed the early ghost-disadvantage issue, with IllFonic nerfing buster gear rather than just buffing the ghost, which shows some tuning intelligence. Active development appears to have wound down, though, based on community signals - so what you see is broadly what you get. If you came here because Dead by Daylight burned you out and you want something lighter in tone, this is a reasonable replacement for a few weeks. If you have four friends who will commit to a session, the ceiling is higher than the reviews suggest. Solo players or people expecting a ranked ladder with meaningful progression past early levels should look elsewhere. Fred, Scout Team
