SNK's long-awaited fighter finally arrives as a complete package, and the REV System alone makes it worth serious attention from anyone tired of modern fighting games that reward button-mashing over reads.

I came into City of the Wolves skeptical that any game could justify a 26-year gap, and within a few hours the skepticism was gone. What SNK has built here is a 2D fighter that deliberately steps back from the aggression-first philosophy of recent genre heavyweights. There are no neutral-skipping dash mechanics, no drive impacts to bail you out of bad situations. Instead, the game forces you to think about positioning, spacing, and timing in a way that feels closer to a chess match than an action reflex test. The centrepiece is the REV System, a shared heat meter that fills as you throw out REV Arts, REV Accels, REV Guards, and REV Blows. Use those enhanced specials too aggressively and the gauge overheats, leaving you locked out of your best tools and dangerously vulnerable to guard breaks. The Selective Potential Gear, or S.P.G., layers on top of that, letting you pre-set a health threshold where your character unlocks stronger move options and the cinematic Hidden Gear supers. Set it low for bigger payoffs, set it high for more conservative access. The two systems talk to each other constantly, and matches feel genuinely different depending on which REV ratio you are in and where your S.P.G. is positioned. On top of that, Just Defense (a parry timed to the exact frame of an incoming hit), Feints, and Braking keep both offensive and defensive players busy with meaningful decisions. It is a lot to absorb, and casual players who want to drop in for fifteen minutes will feel that weight. The Revenge Edition is the right way to come in fresh. It bundles the base game with all three season passes, meaning the roster has grown well beyond the lean 17-character launch lineup. Season Pass 2 alone added Kim Jae Hoon, Nightmare Geese, Blue Mary, Wolfgang Krauser, and MR. KARATE, names that will hit hard for long-time fans. The Episodes of South Town single-player mode, added post-launch, functions as a light RPG adventure, sending you through South Town completing quest objectives and grinding XP across colour-coded difficulty fights. It is not a deep story mode by any standard, but it gives solo players something to chew on beyond arcade runs. Online benefits from cross-platform multiplayer, and community sentiment around the netcode has been largely positive, which was a genuine concern given some jank that appeared during the beta period. The art direction deserves its own mention. The American comic-book visual style pops in motion, with thick outlines, flat colour fills, and impact effects that make every counter-hit feel like a panel splash. The soundtrack backs that energy up. The one legitimate criticism that has stuck since launch is the controversial guest roster additions, specifically Ronaldo and Salvatore, which split opinion sharply on both tone and balance. They are not deal-breakers, but they are a reminder that live-service fighting games carry compromises. The Revenge Edition represents the game at its most complete and most balanced, which tips the scales comfortably toward a recommendation for anyone who has been watching from the sidelines.
