The combat is the main event, and it earns the attention. City of the Wolves is a four-button fighter that plays strictly on a 2D plane despite running on a 3D engine, which keeps that old-school arcade rhythm intact. The REV System is the defining mechanic: a shared gauge that fuels REV Arts, REV Accel, and REV Blows, but punishes reckless spending by locking you out of those tools entirely if you burn through it too fast. Meter management matters here in a way that feels genuinely different from Street Fighter 6's Drive Gauge or Tekken 8's aggression-first philosophy. Neutral and defensive play carry real weight, and classic mechanics from Garou: Mark of the Wolves - Just Defense, Feinting, Wild Punish, and the Selective Potential Gear (S.P.G.) placement system - return with enough polish to feel fresh rather than dusty. The S.P.G. is a nice wrinkle: you choose where on your health bar the gauge sits before the match, which changes when your REV Blows and Hidden Gear supers become available, adding a small pregame decision that snowballs across rounds.

The roster by Season 2 is a good-sized crowd. Fatal Fury regulars like Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, Blue Mary, and Wolfgang Krauser sit alongside returning Garou faces, guest crossover fighters from Street Fighter (Ken and Chun-Li), and the headline curio of Cristiano Ronaldo - reportedly the first real-world person to become a playable fighting game character. Whether that last entry lands as fun or gimmicky probably depends on your patience for brand collaboration, but the legacy roster around it is solid. Season 2 also brought a meaningful balance pass that trimmed down some of the launch's more overpowering characters, so the competitive field feels healthier now than at release.
