Codemasters finally has the WRC license back, and the rally DNA is undeniable - but a rocky PC launch, a kernel-level anti-cheat controversy, and a career mode that plays it safe keep this from being the slam-dunk it should have been.

I've spent enough time with rally games to know the difference between a title that respects the sport and one that just slaps a license on it. EA SPORTS WRC lands firmly in the former camp - the handling model is genuinely excellent, and if you own a force feedback wheel you owe it to yourself to spend at least an afternoon with it. Codemasters rebuilt the FFB system from scratch, and it shows: gravel texture, bump feedback over crests, and the moment a rear-wheel-drive classic starts to step out on a wet tarmac stage all come through your hands in a way that feels right. The content breadth here is hard to argue with. You get over 200 stages spread across 17 real-world rally locations - from the tight switchbacks of Mexico to the high-speed gravel of Sweden and Japan - plus a car roster that spans six decades of WRC history, covering everything from 1960s front-engine classics through the terrifying Group B machines to current Rally1 hybrids. Career mode lets you start from the bottom in Junior WRC, work up through WRC2, manage a team budget, keep a sponsor happy, and make weekly scheduling decisions that actually matter. A dedicated Rally School with graded medal challenges, Moments (curated historical scenarios inspired by real WRC highlights), Regularity Rallies, online Clubs, and Time Trials round out a package that is genuinely beefy for a niche motorsport sim. Accessibility options are meaningful too: Beginner, Experienced, and Pro difficulty presets each tune the assist levels and AI, and the adjustable difficulty tag in the store listing is not marketing filler. Here is the honest problem, though. The move from Codemasters' own EGO engine to Unreal Engine 4 caused real pain at launch - shader stutter on PC was a persistent and punishing issue in a game where a single frame hitch can send you into a ditch at speed. Patches have significantly reduced the frequency of these hitches, but they have not been fully eliminated. More recently, EA dropped a kernel-level anti-cheat into the game post-launch and without advance notice, which locked out Steam Deck and Linux players entirely and drove a wave of angry review bombs that explain a decent chunk of that 62% positive score. If you are on a mainstream Windows PC the anti-cheat is unlikely to affect you day-to-day, but it is worth knowing the history. Hardcore sim fans who consider Dirt Rally 2.0 sacred ground may also find this a notch easier and more accessible - the grip model trends slightly toward sim-cade, which is a deliberate design choice rather than a flaw, but purists should calibrate their expectations accordingly. For the casual or mid-tier racing fan wondering whether to jump in: the gamepad support is legitimately good (one of the few rally titles that can be said about), and the difficulty scaling means you do not need a three-pedal setup to have a good time. There is no split-screen, which is a shame for the living room crowd, and the online multiplayer lobbies do not have the same magnetic pull as a kart racer. This is fundamentally a solo-or-async-leaderboard experience. Think of it as a game you play between Saturday night sessions, not during them. Riley, Scout Team
