Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam and still earning it a decade later. Every zombie-survival itch you have gets scratched here, plus a few you didn't know about.

I have a rule: if a game makes me late to bed because I convinced myself one more rooftop sprint was fine, it has done something right. Dying Light held me hostage that way for a embarrassingly long stretch, and the Definitive Edition bundles every reason why into a single package that is genuinely hard to argue against. The foundation is a first-person open world built around two interlocking ideas: parkour traversal and melee combat. The parkour still feels like the genre's gold standard. Momentum is everything. You build speed across rooftops in the Slums, time a drop-kick into a cluster of infected below, and immediately vault a car to keep from getting surrounded. The rhythm of it becomes second nature surprisingly fast, and the skill tree rewards leaning into it hard. There is a separate Agility progression track that unlocks abilities through use rather than menu grinding, so sprinting and jumping actually make you better at sprinting and jumping, which is a small but satisfying feedback loop. Combat sits on the opposite end of the tension dial. Weapons degrade, blunt and bladed tools handle differently, and wrapping a machete in electrified wire or slapping a burning mod onto a bat is the kind of crafting system that stays fun because the output is always immediately, viscerally useful. Firearms are available but intentionally punishing to lean on, since gunshots attract infected, which keeps melee front-and-center where it belongs. Day and night cycles are not just atmospheric window dressing. During the day you can reliably outrun or outmaneuver most threats. At night the Volatiles come out, faster and more aggressive enemies that turn the city into a genuine horror scenario and reward players who learn the UV-light and flare systems. Nightmare Mode, included here, cranks that tension further if you want nights that feel like a genuine threat rather than a management exercise. On the RPG side, three separate skill trees cover Survivor, Agility, and Power, giving enough build variety to make a second playthrough feel meaningfully different rather than just a stat reskin. The Definitive Edition layers in a substantial amount of content on top of the base game. The Following expansion adds a rural map, a customizable buggy, and its own story branch that runs roughly ten additional hours for the main thread with more for completionists. Bozak Horde brings a wave-based challenge mode with its own side narrative. Hellraid drops a dark-fantasy dungeon-crawler mode into the same client, which is an odd fit but a welcome one if you want a palette cleanser. The volume of DLC packs, outfits, and weapon bundles also included is significant, though new players should expect a brief period of menu paralysis sorting through what unlocks at the start. The story across the main game is functional rather than revelatory, protagonist Kyle Crane makes decisions occasionally for plot convenience rather than character logic, and a handful of side quests exist purely to pad the Survivor XP bar. None of it is bad enough to derail things, but if you come in expecting narrative depth on the level of a dedicated story-RPG, adjust expectations accordingly. Four-player online co-op works well and raises enemy difficulty to compensate, making it the preferred mode for players who want the combat to stay challenging past the midgame. The asymmetric Be the Zombie PvP mode, where one player invades another's session as a powerful Night Hunter, is one of the more creative uses of invasion mechanics from this era and holds up better than expected. Anti-cheat is present but the online modes have historically had issues with modded lobbies, so go in with friends rather than randoms when possible. For anyone who skipped the original and its years of DLC drops, this is the cleanest way in. For returning players, the performance updates and consolidated content make it worth revisiting. The filler quests are still there, the story still coasts where it should push, but the moment-to-moment loop of vaulting rooftops and improvising brutal takedowns remains one of the most satisfying in the survival-action genre.
