I went in expecting cozy fishing sim and got body horror instead. Dredge wraps Lovecraftian atmosphere around a deceptively simple loop: sail to fishing spots, catch increasingly wrong creatures, sell them for boat upgrades. The catch descriptions are where the writing shines, each entry suggesting something darker lurking in the archipelago's lore. The progression feels deliberate rather than grindy, and the boat-upgrade system gives you real reasons to push into deeper waters despite the creeping dread. It's short (4-6 hours) and lean by design. The fishing itself is mechanical, not engaging on its own, but that's intentional. The game's strength is atmosphere and narrative payoff, not twitch gameplay. If you're burnt out on bloated RPGs and want something that trusts you to piece together a weird story from environmental details and catch flavor text, this lands. Just don't expect jump scares or traditional horror beats. It's quieter, weirder, and all the better for it.
