Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions is an arcade sports game built on the bones of a beloved football manga franchise. Forget simulation physics and tactical pressing lines - this is football where players charge up super shots that crack the pitch, goalkeepers punch volleys into orbit, and a single match can last twenty minutes of escalating special-move exchanges. The core loop is fast, flashy, and deliberately over-the-top, and if you can get on board with that premise, there is genuine fun buried inside it.

The two main single-player paths are where the RPG label earns partial credit. Episode: Tsubasa follows the manga's protagonist through a career story with light progression, unlockable skills, and stat upgrades tied to match performance. Episode: New Hero lets you create a custom player and work through a rival school storyline that has its own branching moments and character beats. Neither mode delivers writing that would impress anyone who came here from Disco Elysium, but for a licensed sports title the story investment is higher than expected. Choice consequences are thin - you pick dialogue options that shade tone more than outcome - but the custom player arc at least lets you shape a playstyle build across a small skill tree. Build variety is modest: you can lean into speed dribbling, shooting power, or passing vision, and each path changes how matches feel in practice, which counts for something.

The combat-adjacent mechanics, meaning the special shot and tackle system, are the heart of the game. Each player has a unique super shot tied to their manga identity, and learning which shots counter which goalkeeper techniques adds a light read-and-react layer. Online versus mode lives or dies by this, and in short bursts it delivers genuine tension. The problem is that the roster of viable super shots narrows fast at higher skill levels, and the game's Mixed Steam rating (hovering around 72 percent positive) reflects a community that found the depth ceiling lower than hoped. The CPU difficulty scaling is also awkward - Normal feels trivial, Hard spikes into cheap momentum-reversal territory, and the middle ground never quite materialises.
