The most thoughtfully designed co-op hangout of 2026 rewards groups who actually talk to each other, and punishes anyone who boots up Discord and skips the whole point.

I kept trying to explain Big Walk to friends before our session and landing on the same useless description: it's a walking game. That's technically correct and completely fails to capture what happens when you get two to twelve people on a hand-crafted island and strip away every crutch the genre normally leans on. No combat, no health bar, no fail state. Just a wide-open world, a toolbox full of walkie-talkies, binoculars, laser pointers, megaphones, flares, whiteboards, and cowbells, and a proximity voice chat system that actually changes how you behave. The proximity chat is not a gimmick here, it is the mechanical spine of the whole thing. Voices fade as you drift apart, echo through corridors, muffle behind walls, and crackle when transmitted through a walkie-talkie. Text chat follows the same spatial rules, so players without a mic can still participate fully, which is a genuinely smart accessibility call. Puzzles scale with lobby size from two players up to four-plus, and while lobbies can hold up to twelve people, the puzzles are always tuned for four, meaning a big group has room to explore, split off, and reconvene without anyone sitting around waiting. Some challenges require one player to describe a sequence of symbols only they can see while teammates replicate it elsewhere. Others need everyone to flip switches in unison, or to shout information across a distance using whatever gear you remembered to pocket. You can only hold one item at a time, which means gear decisions actually matter and the whiteboard remains criminally underused despite being one of the funniest tools in the box. The world itself is hand-crafted, set in an Australian bushland loosely inspired by Wilsons Promontory, and the design density is immediately noticeable. Every route feels placed deliberately, radio stations scattered across the island each play their own diegetic music, and solving a puzzle drops a physical MacGuffin that unlocks further areas. The game has a real beginning, middle, and end, which sets it apart sharply from the endless-loop co-op model that has dominated the past two years. House House built something finite and authored, closer in spirit to The Witness than to a chaotic extraction romp, but with the shared-discovery energy that solo puzzle games can never deliver. For the "is it fun for four friends" test, the honest answer is: yes, but conditionally. The session requires actual coordination to set up. Whoever hosts holds the save, so progress is tied to that person being present next time. House House strongly recommends using the in-game proximity chat rather than a parallel Discord call, and they are right to do so, but convincing your usual lobby to close Discord is its own social puzzle. Patient, exploratory groups will find moments that become stories. Groups who need constant action or a clear objective marker every thirty seconds will drift. Critics have flagged that intricate progression systems or deep puzzle complexity are not on offer here, and that is a fair warning for players who want a structured challenge over a shared hangout. Best for friend groups who will actually close Discord and let the proximity chat do its job.
