Gorgeous dinosaurs, a completely broken launch reputation, and enough taming depth to consume months of your life - ARK: Survival Ascended is the most visually ambitious version of a game that still can't decide if it wants to be finished.

I've spent enough time with survival sandboxes to know exactly when a game is selling a promise instead of a product, and ARK: Survival Ascended sits right on that line with its prehistoric claws dangling over both sides. The core loop is genuinely seductive: you wash ashore with nothing, manage health, stamina, oxygen, food, and water meters while punching trees, and within a few hours you're taming a Parasaur and eyeing a Carnotaurus with exactly the kind of optimistic delusion that makes this genre addictive. The taming system alone - which requires knocking out creatures, monitoring torpor, and feeding species-specific food - is more layered than most dedicated pet systems in dedicated RPGs. Breeding adds another tier entirely, with mutation counters now tracked on their own dedicated stat so you can actually build a lineage without a spreadsheet nightmare. The Unreal Engine 5 upgrade is the centrepiece of the whole pitch, and visually it does deliver. Dynamic global illumination makes jungle canopies genuinely moody. The water physics system means your tamed creatures create actual ripples and splashes when they wade in, not just clipping through a flat texture. Destructible foliage, photorealistic creature renders, and draw distances that let you actually see those distant mountain peaks are all real improvements over Survival Evolved. The reworked building system is also a step forward - one wall piece that branches into solid wall, doorframe, window, or hidden door variants cleans up the crafting menu considerably, and engram folders help manage the clutter as you level up. Here is where the glow fades, though. The Unreal Engine 5 visual ambition puts a brutal demand on hardware, and even mid-to-high-end PCs report frame rate drops, microstuttering, and crashes that have been present since launch. More frustrating is that several critical bugs carried over wholesale from Survival Evolved - including a character deletion bug that can trigger when transferring between maps, which is genuinely savage in a game where a single taming session can represent hours of work. The dinosaur AI and pathfinding are improved but still show cracks. Official PvP servers inherit the familiar meshing and hacking exploits, and the community broadly recommends unofficial servers for any kind of stable experience. On top of all that, some exclusive tames sit behind paid DLC for a game already sold at a premium, which is a choice that has rightly annoyed the player base. For a first-timer to the ARK ecosystem, Ascended is actually the better entry point now that Survival Evolved's official servers have been shut down. Cross-platform multiplayer, integrated mod support through CurseForge, and all original maps included without extra cost are genuine wins. The lore - delivered through scattered explorer notes voiced by characters like Sir Edmund Rockwell - rewards the curious, and the progression from stone tools to Tek-tier technology carries a satisfying arc even if the writing between those beats is thin. Tribe co-op is where the game genuinely shines, and a well-organised group of friends can paper over most of the jank with shared labour and mutual suffering. If you loved Survival Evolved and have a GPU that can handle the overhead, Ascended is the version you will play going forward by necessity as much as choice. If you are brand new and patient with Early Access roughness, there is a deep and rewarding creature-taming sandbox underneath the performance ceilings and monetisation friction. Anyone hoping for a polished, bug-free reimagining should temper expectations hard. Monika, Scout Team
