ARC Raiders
The extraction shooter genre finally got its mainstream moment, and ARC Raiders is why. If you bounced off Tarkov's spreadsheet-first design, this one deserves a second look.

Acerca de ARC Raiders
I came into ARC Raiders skeptical. Embark already had my attention with The Finals, but pivoting from a cooperative PvE shooter to a full PvPvE extraction game felt like a calculated trend-chase. Two hundred hours later I can say: they read the room correctly, then did something smarter than just copying the homework. The loop is third-person extraction: drop topside from the underground city of Speranza, fill your pack with loot and crafting materials, and get out alive via extraction elevators, metro stations, air shafts, or key-gated raider hatches. You're running against a 30-minute clock with hostile ARC robots patrolling every open stretch of terrain and other human players doing exactly what you're doing. Die, and you lose everything in your inventory except whatever you stashed in a safe pocket before going in. That per-run risk is the entire game. Embark just tuned it better than anyone else in the genre. The weapon sandbox is wider than it looks on paper: SMGs for aggressive indoor flanks, semi-auto shotguns for corridor control, rifles for mid-range trades, and a tier of special gear that includes energy beam weapons and ARC-specific launchers that genuinely change how you approach the PvE side. Everything can be modded with stocks, extended magazines, and sights, and each weapon upgrades through three performance tiers. The skill system splits into Conditioning, Mobility, and Survival branches, which is light enough to not feel like homework but meaningful enough that your build actually shifts your playstyle. The gunplay itself is tight. Sound design is exceptional: shield breaks crack like a starting pistol, footsteps carry real information, and proximity voice chat turns every standoff into genuine theatre. The ARC enemies are smarter than they have any right to be. A Leaper cornering you behind a bus while you're out of ammo is the kind of moment you describe to your squad for a week. The five maps (Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Spaceport, The Blue Gate, and post-launch Stella Montis) each carry a distinct color palette and threat layout. Weather events like Electromagnetic Storm change spawn mechanics, expose your shield to ARC aggression, and push players into the same zones, which is exactly the kind of systemic pressure that generates the stories people keep talking about. Post-launch, Embark has been shipping monthly content drops, the Rascal grenade launcher, balance patches, a new trader tier, and seasonal Expedition Projects (a roughly 60-day voluntary reset mechanic for players who want a prestige run). Weapon balance has not been perfect: reviewers flagged at least one overpowered PvP rifle and a skill that was generating too much high-tier loot at launch, though patches have addressed several of these. The AI-generated NPC voice lines are a legitimate criticism that has not gone away and is worth knowing about before you buy. For PC players specifically, UE5 performance is well-reported as stable. The game is cross-platform and supports controllers. The overall Steam score is sitting at 84 percent positive across a large review pool, with recent reviews trending more mixed, which likely reflects the community working through balance expectations as the player base matures past the honeymoon window. The current state is strong, but anyone expecting a fully-solved competitive ladder is getting there. Solo play is viable but harder: you are fighting robots and players simultaneously without a callout, and the maps reward people who know the extraction routes. If you can put together even a two-person squad, the experience gets measurably better.
