The new Halo Combat Evolved remake footage has been making the rounds, and if you grew up with the original you'll probably end up doing exactly what anyone obsessive would do: pull up the classic version side by side and start squinting. Some changes are immediately visible in the visuals and animation work, but the more interesting stuff is in the feel of it. Movement, weapon handling, the way enemies react to being shot at in that chunky, satisfying way the original nailed so well. Modernizing that without accidentally sanding off the texture that made it great in the first place is genuinely hard to do.

The early impression seems to be that it's different in ways that are easy to spot but harder to judge. That's not automatically a bad thing. Remakes that play it completely safe tend to feel like high-res screenshots of nostalgia rather than actual games. But remakes that drift too far from the source start to feel like they're arguing with the original instead of celebrating it. Where this one lands on that spectrum is still an open question, and honestly the only way to really know is to get it in your hands and see whether the sandbox chaos that made Combat Evolved a landmark still shows up when you need it to.
