GamerScout Verdict
A co-op loot machine with elite gunplay, best experienced with friends who can tolerate the writing's worst impulses.

About Borderlands 3 Next Level Edition
I've put well over thirty hours into Borderlands 3 and the thing that keeps pulling me back is not the narrative, it's the moment-to-moment feel of shooting, looting, and immediately finding something weirder than what I was just using. Gearbox refined the core gunplay more than any previous entry: mantling, sliding, and a new layer of verticality make fights feel kinetic in a way the earlier games never managed. The randomized arsenal still does the heavy lifting, and on average it delivers more satisfying surprises than Borderlands 2 ever did. Rifles that spawn volcanoes. Pistols with self-propelling bullet shields. Guns with legs that chase enemies while shouting insults. The joke lands because the combat can actually support that much absurdity. The four Vault Hunters each bring a genuinely distinct playstyle. Moze the Gunner calls down an Iron Bear mech for burst damage windows. Amara the Siren channels ghostly fists for crowd control and AOE punishment. Zane the Operative leans into gadget-heavy tactical play, drones, decoys, clone-based shenanigans, and rewards players who like managing cooldowns. FL4K the Beastmaster is the easiest solo pick, letting a beefy pet tank while you line up crit shots from cover. Each has three skill trees, and while the individual nodes lean toward incremental stat bumps more than dramatic playstyle pivots, the combination of tree hybrids and swappable action skills gives you enough build variety to stay interested past the credits. Endgame teeth come from Mayhem mode, a risk-reward system that stacks enemy modifiers in exchange for better loot drops, plus the Circle of Slaughter horde mode and the Proving Grounds gauntlet runs, which require you to clear three timed areas before reaching a boss. Where the game genuinely stumbles is the writing. The Calypso Twins are no Handsome Jack, not even close. The humor swings between sharp and painfully try-hard, and the main storyline rarely gives you a reason to care beyond the next bullet. Side quests range from inspired to pure padding, and if you are the kind of player who needs narrative payoff to stay motivated, the campaign's final act will test your patience. The story takes around twenty hours solo, and solo endgame, especially Mayhem at higher difficulties, can feel punishing in a way that co-op simply does not. Gearbox clearly designed the top end of this game around squads, and that shows. The Next Level Edition bundles the base game with the Multiverse Final Form cosmetic packs for all four Vault Hunters. These are purely cosmetic additions, alternate character skins, so they won't change how the game plays, but they do give your chosen hunter a distinct look from day one without grinding for it. The edition does not include either Season Pass, so DLC campaigns like Guns, Love, and Tentacles or the Designer's Cut's extra skill trees are sold separately. Worth knowing before you assume this is the complete package. For RPG-minded players: the build depth here is real but not deep enough to carry the game alone. What carries it is the co-op, the loot chaos, and the sheer feel of the combat at its peak. If you have a regular squad and a tolerance for loud, chaotic humor that occasionally misses, this is one of the better co-op shooters of its generation. Come in solo expecting a branching narrative and you will bounce off it. Come in with friends and a controller-friendly setup, and you will lose a weekend without noticing.
