Seven or eight hours of flesh-beast carnage with a genuinely excellent techno soundtrack and over 40 guns to cycle through. The hook lands; the depth doesn't quite follow.

My first honest reaction to Wildcat Gun Machine was a mix of genuine delight and a small, nagging suspicion that the whole thing might run out of ideas before I did. That suspicion turned out to be half right, and half irrelevant depending on what you want from an evening session. Chunkybox Games, a solo Brisbane-based developer, built a top-down isometric twin-stick shooter structured around Acts rather than procedural generation. Every room and enemy wave is hand-placed, which gives the encounters a crafted, intentional feel that procedural bullet-hell games often lack. The loop is direct: explore dungeons, hunt colored keys to unlock new areas, defeat mini-bosses, then face a demonic elder god possessing a giant mech called a Gun Machine at each Act's end. When you fill a meter by killing enemies, you can commandeer one of those mechs yourself for a brief window of missile-and-laser mayhem. That mech mode is one of the clearest highs the game offers, even if you can't plan around it reliably. The loadout system gives you a primary pistol with unlimited ammo and a secondary special weapon with limited reserves. There are reportedly over 40 gun types to find and swap between at checkpoints, ranging from piercing rapid-fire rounds to slow-firing orb cannons. You also pick up a dash ability and a rechargeable grenade, both upgradeable with bones (the in-game currency dropped by enemies). The currency loop and checkpoint respawn system, where white spirit cats represent your extra lives, give the game a distinct personality even when the mechanical depth starts to thin. The techno soundtrack is a genuine asset throughout, the kind that actually sustains focus across long dungeon stretches rather than just filling silence. Where Wildcat Gun Machine struggles is in the honesty of its ambition versus its execution. The two-weapon carry limit feels restrictive in a way that clips momentum rather than creating interesting decisions. Ammo for special guns is scarce and does not replenish mid-arena, so you regularly find yourself poking away with the underpowered sidearm when the fight calls for something more. Dungeons run long given the simplicity of the room-to-room combat, and the complete absence of story or character context means the only driver is the shooting itself. That is a viable choice, but it demands the shooting stay fresh, and critics broadly agreed it plateaus before the credits. A handful of technical rough edges, including inconsistent collision near doorframes and the occasional unresponsive ability input, compound the sense that this needed one more polish pass. For anyone who wants a solid, non-roguelike bullet-hell dungeon crawler that they can finish in a single weekend without meta-progression pressure, Wildcat Gun Machine delivers on that specific brief. It is a debut effort with personality, a standout sound design, and enough weapon variety to keep at least one full run interesting. Just don't arrive expecting the mechanical richness of Enter the Gungeon or the narrative momentum of Hades. Go in for the guns, the cats, and that soundtrack, and you will likely leave satisfied enough. Kai, Scout Team
