It trusts you to figure it out, which is a respectful design choice that also catches unprepared players off guard. Consider it a soft difficulty layer hidden inside what markets itself as a relaxing experience. The combat uses a party of up to twelve recruitable and upgradeable characters, each carrying four distinct skills.
