I have a soft spot for the tiny corners of Steam where a small team quietly releases a game-book sequel that almost nobody covers, and The Adventurous Four is exactly that kind of release. NLB project built their niche on nonlinear text adventures with branching paths and genuine consequence, and this follow-up to Wild Island Quest carries that same handcrafted sensibility forward onto a new and more treacherous voyage. The format here is interactive fiction in its most honest form. You read, you choose, the story branches. The four friends from the original return, and the scenario escalates from island survival to an even more dangerous trip aboard a flying ship. That shift in setting brings a different kind of tension. Where Wild Island Quest kept you grounded and foraging, The Adventurous Four puts you somewhere more precarious, and the choices feel appropriately weightier for it. The non-linear plot means your decisions redirect the chain of events meaningfully rather than cosmetically, and the promise of multiple paths gives the whole thing replay value that a single short sitting will not exhaust. Worth noting: this game was almost entirely written by the team's translator and graphic designer, Sergey, rather than the studio's lead developer. That authorship detail matters because you can feel a slightly different narrative voice here compared to the first game, a little more focused on group dynamics and loyalty under pressure. The friendship between the characters is the emotional core, and the writing leans into it without becoming saccharine. The visual presentation sits in the same modest but functional register as the predecessor, with illustrated locations and clean interface work that keeps you reading rather than squinting. The honest limitations are the same ones any game-book carries: if you need audio-reactive soundscapes, animated cutscenes, or systemic mechanics, this is not your title. It is almost entirely a reading experience, mouse-only, with the atmosphere carried by text pacing and simple visuals. Players who bounced off Wild Island Quest will find nothing here to change their mind. But for the audience that appreciated the original's quietly tense survival narrative, this sequel is a natural next chapter rather than a retreat. The Adventurous Four sits comfortably in the sub-five-hour tier, and it knows it. There is something genuinely refreshing about a game-book that respects its own length, tells its story across multiple branching paths, and then lets you go. No padding, no inflated runtime to justify a price tag. It is modest, sincere work from a small studio that clearly loves the interactive fiction form.
