Deeper than the marketing suggests and harder than it looks, this zero-gravity hauler rewards patience and punishes anyone who flies off the space highway into asteroid fields.

I came into Star Trucker expecting Euro Truck Simulator with a sci-fi coat of paint. What I got was closer to a resource-management survival game that occasionally lets you relax at the wheel - and that gap between expectation and reality is the most important thing to understand before buying. This is a two-person indie project from Monster and Monster, published by Raw Fury, and the ambition on display for a team that small is genuinely impressive. The core loop puts you in the cab of Lucky-J, a rocket-powered big rig running cargo jobs across a solar system connected by jump gates, with hyper highways that keep debris and oncoming traffic out of your path if you choose to use them. The mechanical depth is where Star Trucker earns its reputation. Forget pressing a hotkey to fix a broken axle. Everything in the cab is tactile: you click the cruise control button on the physical dashboard, you stand up from the driver's seat to swap out dead power cells, replace CPU chips, and cycle air filters. Hit an asteroid and you are suiting up, stepping through the airlock, and sealing hull breaches by hand before your oxygen bleeds out. Cold thrusters shake the rig until they warm up; disabling Drive Assist throws full Newtonian physics at you and rewards the fuel savings if you can handle the momentum. Four difficulty tiers span from Driver (near-sandbox) through Mechanic and up to Hardcore, where oxygen failure is fatal. The recommended middle tier is the sweet spot most reviewers landed on, and it is legitimately challenging in the early game when battery drain and repair costs eat your earnings faster than the jobs can replace them. Stick with it past that hump and the loop clicks into something satisfying. The weaknesses are real and worth naming. There is no fleet management or company-building end-game of the kind ETS2 veterans will miss: you progress by earning licenses through a skill tree that gates new cargo types and sectors, but the destination is always just more hauling. The story missions that unlock new content received mixed reception, with some players finding them more chore than reward. The writing itself is functional rather than memorable, though the CB radio cast of trucker personalities adds colour to long hauls. Critics at Metacritic averaged 73 out of 100, with the recurring note being that the game is narrower than it initially appears, and a Steam user base sitting around 78 percent positive on over three thousand reviews reflects broadly genuine satisfaction rather than uncritical enthusiasm. For pure sim fans, the comparison that fits best is somewhere between American Truck Simulator and Elite Dangerous trader mode: the structured highway runs of the former, the 3D docking precision and systems micromanagement of the latter, minus any combat. Players expecting to zone out to podcast audio for forty hours straight will hit frustration walls unless they stay on the space roads and learn to baby their batteries. Players who like reading the systems, optimising a pre-trip resupply stop, and making the risk-reward call of pushing a timed fragile cargo job through a static storm will find a game that quietly holds attention well beyond its price point.
