A neon-lit side-scroller where your only weapon is a shield, and knowing when to block matters more than button-mashing. Short, handcrafted, and backed by a synthwave pulse that lingers.

I have a soft spot for small studios that commit fully to a single weird idea, and Shieldmaiden: Remix Edition commits hard. Dumativa's whole design premise is that Asta, the protagonist searching a machine-ravaged city for her missing sister, carries exactly one tool for everything: a shield that emerges from a bracelet. That bracelet doubles as her companion, an AI with personality. The conceit sounds gimmicky right up until the moment the mechanics click. The shield does more than you expect. You can use it for close-range melee strikes, throw it as a short-range projectile, ride it across electrified floors like a makeshift surfboard, and hop off enemies' heads to cross gaps. Most importantly, blocking incoming fire charges a shield energy meter, and when that meter fills you can release a screen-clearing AOE blast. Several bosses require this charged release to even become vulnerable, which means the entire game is quietly teaching you that patience and defense are the actual offensive strategy. It is a small, tidy loop, and across nine levels spread across four distinct areas of Modigard it holds up reasonably well. The Remix Edition also brought a revised story, balance adjustments, new levels, and quality-of-life improvements over the original release, which matters if you played the first version and bounced off. The honest caveats are real, though. Critics and players alike have flagged that regular enemies fall too easily, which makes the mid-game feel underchallenging, while some late-game boss attacks felt almost calibrated to overload the shield even when you play correctly. Enemy variety runs thin across the runtime. Sound design has also drawn mild complaints; the soundtrack itself is genuinely atmospheric, a blend of eighties synthwave and classical that gives the city of Modigard an eerie, mythic weight, but in-combat audio feedback can feel sparse, leaving fights quieter than they should be. The story is light enough that it functions mostly as a reason to keep moving through glowing corridors rather than a narrative you will think about afterward. What Shieldmaiden does have going for it is craft at the level you can feel. The pixel art is neon-drenched and clean, the character animation has real care behind it, and the whole thing wraps up in two to three hours without overstaying its welcome. Steam players broadly agree with that read, the game sits at a very positive rating from its community. If you approach it as a tight, focused arcade-style platformer with a genuinely unusual mechanical identity rather than a deep action game with replay depth, the disappointment gap closes considerably. Think less Hollow Knight, more an affectionate side-scroller from a studio still finding its ceiling. Kai, Scout Team
