A pint-sized forced-scroll platformer that sneaks a surprisingly tender meditation on mortality underneath its whimsical wizard-runs-from-Death premise. Short, focused, and worth every minute it asks for.

I have a soft spot for games that know exactly what they are and refuse to apologize for it. Running on Magic is one of those games. Gusarapo Games built a forced-scroll auto-runner around a single, quietly resonant idea: a clumsy old wizard perpetually fleeing a Grim Reaper who isn't really in a hurry. That premise could have been a throwaway gag. Instead, it carries a subtle emotional current through every run, because the story underneath is genuinely about accepting mortality, not just outrunning it. Mechanically, you are jumping, floating, and stomping through procedurally generated levels that shift layout on every run, so muscle memory only gets you so far. You collect scattered magic to fill a resource bar that powers your brief float ability and a downward stomp for stunning blob-type enemies. Portals, speed boosts, and bubble traversal nodes show up across the five themed worlds to keep movement feeling varied. The procedural generation means a failed run rarely drops you into an identical obstacle sequence, which takes some of the sting out of restarting from the beginning of a level after taking too much damage or falling. The loop is fast and readable, the kind of thing you grasp inside two minutes and spend the next hour refining. Where the game really earns its handcrafted identity is in its pixel art and soundtrack. Each of the five worlds carries its own atmosphere, and the background layers reward a slower eye even while the screen is demanding your full attention on platforms. The music is not ambient wallpaper. It pulses with the run, rhythmically cozy in easier stretches and quietly tense as the Reaper closes the gap, and reviewers who covered it singled out the sound design as one of the game's genuine high points. That kind of deliberate audio-visual pairing from a small studio is the thing I write about this job for. The honest reservation: this is a short game. One playthrough of the story campaign can be completed quickly by most players. Gusarapo accounts for that with four difficulty tiers that progressively strip health, reduce magic pickups, and accelerate scroll speed, culminating in a one-hit mode that transforms the experience entirely. An Endless mode with ever-increasing speed adds an arcade dimension for those who want a score to chase. If you need a 20-hour content package, look elsewhere. If you want a game that knows when to end, handles its closing beats with more emotional grace than you expect from the genre, and gives you a handful of meaningful replay hooks for the price of a coffee, Running on Magic earns that ask.
