A college life-sim visual novel that hides a genuine stats-management puzzle behind its romantic premise - but first-time players who skip the spreadsheet work will sleepwalk into a dud ending.

I respect a visual novel that makes me open a notepad. Roommates, published on PC by Octaday in February 2024, is a life-simulation dating visual novel set inside a shared student apartment, and the slice-of-life premise barely hints at how mechanically demanding it gets once you actually try to win a romantic route. The premise is simple: your player character has moved in with several housemates and must navigate a college semester juggling studies, part-time work, social events, and relationship-building. What it keeps quiet is that every week you fill out a scheduler, and the activities you pick directly raise or lower six distinct character traits - Rationality, Spontaneity, Creativity, Reflection, Organization, and Active fitness. Each romance candidate is keyed to a specific pair of those traits, so chasing the right numbers while simultaneously keeping friendship meters climbing is a tighter resource-allocation problem than it first appears. That is the loop strategy players like me find quietly enjoyable. The mechanical core holds up better than the writing does. Each romance target has two required stats, and you can check your current standing at any time via the in-game Stats screen, which is a genuinely useful transparency move that a lot of sim games skip. The scheduler covers morning, afternoon, and evening slots across a 21-week semester, and activities range from attending classes and working at a bookstore to extracurricular clubs and in-person events. Some events are mutually exclusive - pick Saturday and you forfeit Sunday - so resource pressure is real without being cruel. The problem is that the hidden scoring on dialogue choices can feel arbitrary. Correct answers during the Halloween whodunnit or the midterm social events do not always behave how intuition says they should, meaning first playthroughs frequently end in underwhelming non-endings unless you consult a guide or commit to a second run with better information. The characters themselves are a mixed bag. On the positive side, the game does give each housemate a distinct personality that deepens over time rather than staying as pure archetype. Post-launch updates remade several characters from scratch, added new story arcs tied to specific characters, and expanded the supporting cast considerably, which signals at least some developer commitment past launch day. Community reception sits around 85 percent positive based on available user data, which is a reasonable indicator that fans of the genre leave satisfied. On the negative side, certain dialogue threads - particularly around the male protagonist route - lean heavily on regressive humour and stereotyping that reviewers across multiple platforms flagged as a genuine friction point. Playing the female protagonist route produces a noticeably cleaner experience. For Diego-brained players who want a gentle test of scheduling optimization, Roommates delivers more than the marketing suggests. The stat-visibility system means you are never fully in the dark, and a skip-seen-dialogue option makes replaying for missed routes far less painful than in comparable visual novels. Completionists chasing every ending will get a respectable number of hours from the content given the expanded roster post-update. That said, pure visual novel readers looking for strong narrative writing or genre newcomers expecting a breezy click-through story will likely find the opaque dialogue scoring punishing and the humour occasionally dated. Approach it like a light resource-management puzzle that happens to be wrapped in anime-style college drama and you will get fair mileage out of it. Diego, Scout Team
