Castle Crashers nostalgia plus fighting-game muscle memory: if that crossover sounds appealing, this Unreal Engine 5 remaster of a 2013 cult brawler is worth a serious look.

My first hour with Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate had me grinning at how confidently it straddles two genres that rarely share a couch. On the surface it reads as a straightforward left-to-right brawler: eight stages inspired by Tokyo districts, waves of enemies, boss at the end, repeat. But the moment you start pulling off directional special moves and chaining light, medium, and heavy attacks into character-specific combos, you realize this thing has genuine fighting-game DNA running through it. The comparison that kept coming to mind was Street Fighter crossed with River City Girls, and that is not a bad place to land. The roster is the real headline. Thirty-eight playable characters is generous for any brawler, and the spread is deliberate rather than padded. The four story-mode leads, Mikoto, Waka, Itsuki, and Yuzuha, each play differently enough that picking a second main feels like a real decision. Characters like Mikoto work as approachable all-rounders, while others require actual investment to unlock their ceiling. On top of that, enemy characters become playable in Arcade Mode once unlocked, and each one brings a distinct combat style. Leveling persists across all modes, so grinding a weaker character in Story carries over when you take them into Arcade or PVP. That RPG loop, allocating skill points, swapping passive items, tuning stats, adds a layer that keeps the grind from feeling hollow. The remaster itself is clean. Moving to Unreal Engine 5 sharpens the chibi pixel art without scrubbing its retro personality. Enemies pop clearly against the backgrounds even when the screen gets busy, and the moment-to-moment feedback, coins and rubies bursting out of downed foes, builds a satisfying rhythm. The soundtrack is the other win: you can run the new J-rock tracks from the all-girl band The Phantom Breakers or switch back to the original and Overdrive OSTs, which is a smart toggle for veterans. Now the honest part. Solo play at default difficulty is forgiving to the point of being dull for anyone who has spent real time in the genre. Button-mashing does work, and the bosses offer limited resistance on normal settings. The versus mode feels thin, since the combat system lacks the depth to hold up against dedicated competition. The bigger concern for anyone planning to lean on online play is that the player pool is sparse, and finding random matches quickly becomes a frustration. This is firmly a better game with three friends in the room than it is with strangers over the internet. The pickup sound effects also become grating faster than they should, a minor but persistent annoyance when loot is everywhere. For beat-em-up fans who already have a couch co-op crew, or for anyone with nostalgia for the original 2013 release, Battle Grounds Ultimate is a well-constructed package that delivers where it promises. Newcomers to the franchise can step in cleanly: the story is a serviceable anime-rescue plot that stays out of the way. Go in expecting an arcade throwback with fighting-game finesse, not a mechanically demanding solo challenge, and you will have a good time. Alex, Scout Team
