A cult-classic Cold War RTS where you trade oil for alien minerals and soldiers double as irreplaceable unit upgrades. Rough edges, remarkable depth.

Original War is a real-time strategy game from Altar Games that does something almost no other RTS bothers with: it makes every individual soldier matter. The setup drops you into a Cold War gone wrong, where a UN geological expedition to Siberia uncovers something far stranger than oil - a mineral called Siberite that turns out to be tied to time travel and alternate timelines. You play through either the American or Russian campaign, and the two sides tell genuinely different stories, not just reskinned missions. That alone puts it ahead of a lot of genre contemporaries. The core loop is where Original War earns its reputation. Soldiers are persistent. They level up, specialize into classes like mechanics, scientists, or gunners, and if one dies, that death is permanent within the campaign. You can finish a mission but arrive at the next one short two veterans because you played recklessly. That tension shapes every engagement. Do you push the enemy base now, or spend twenty minutes farming experience on patrols to make sure your rifleman hits the rank where he can crew heavy weapons? The build-order brain naturally gravitates to the latter, and the game rewards that patience. Resource management is tight and deliberate - Siberite is scarce, so vehicle and structure choices carry real weight. You are not floating resources and spamming units; you are rationing. For newcomers to the genre, the learning curve is real but not cruel. The tutorial missions do a competent job of introducing the mechanics without drowning you in tooltips. The bigger adjustment is mental: stop thinking in waves and start thinking in individuals. Once that clicks, the campaign stops feeling punishing and starts feeling like a puzzle with guns. The AI is serviceable for the era - it will pressure you and exploit exposed positions, though it does not adapt dynamically the way modern titles attempt. Veteran RTS players will find the AI readable after a few missions, but the mission design compensates by throwing you into scenarios where numerical advantage rarely saves you anyway. Positioning, unit specialization, and knowing when to retreat are the actual skills being tested. The Metacritic score of 61 reflects original critical reception and should be treated as a historical artifact. The Steam review base of over 2,100 reviews at 95% positive tells a more accurate story about how this game lands with actual strategy players. It has a passionate community and active mod support through Steam Workshop, which matters for a title this age. Mods extend replayability, add new missions, and in some cases rebalance the economy. The mod ecosystem is not enormous, but it is maintained, and that is more than most games from this era can claim. The game's age shows in the UI and pathfinding - units will occasionally make baffling routing decisions, and the interface requires patience - but none of it is game-breaking, just occasionally annoying. Original War is a genuinely singular RTS. Its combination of persistent unit progression, dual-faction campaigns with diverging narratives, and scarcity-driven economy creates decision-making density that most modern examples of the genre do not match. If you want to press a button and watch a hundred units steamroll a base, look elsewhere. If you want to spend forty minutes planning an assault because losing your only engineer to a lucky shot would cascade into a mission failure two hours later, this is exactly that kind of game.
