A ruthless poverty simulator with genuine strategic depth - but buyer beware: the developer went dark after launch, leaving this Early Access title in an uncertain state.

My first instinct when loading Nobody - The Turnaround was to treat it like a tight resource-management puzzle, and that instinct was mostly correct. You start with nothing - no savings, no connections, no fallback - and the game's opening hours are a genuine stress test of prioritisation. Every in-game hour costs something: energy, money, mood, or hygiene. Miss a shower, and your 'Cool' stat (the game's composite measure of motivation and social standing) drops, which in turn tanks your relationship prospects and limits which jobs will even consider you. It is an interlocking needs system that would feel at home in a Paradox survival layer, except here the stakes are personal rather than imperial. The career ladder is where the strategic meat lives. You begin with unskilled gigs - bricklaying, leaflet distribution, mail delivery - and grind skill points to unlock better-paying work. Jobs can be completed either as manual mini-games for a bonus payout or skipped via an automatic cutscene if you just want to bank the base wage and move on. That dual-execution option is a smart design call: it respects your time without stripping the tactile feedback entirely. The 30-day Story Mode (the 'Debt Trap' scenario) functions as a tight tutorial with narrative stakes baked in - pay back a dangerous loan or watch your sister get taken. It is a focused, high-pressure introduction that communicates the core loop better than any written tooltip could. Once cleared, Sandbox Mode and Challenge Mode open up, letting you run characters with unique starting restrictions for more freeform or punishing runs. Where the game struggles is in its long-term decision depth. Once you crack the optimal daily schedule - work, eat cheaply, sleep at the hostel, skill up in the evening - the difficulty deflates fast. There are not enough economic shocks or social penalties to keep the mid-game tense, and the Sandbox mode essentially replays the same loop without the narrative tension holding it together. Compared to something like This War of Mine for existential pressure, or even a light city builder for sheer interaction variety, Nobody feels thin once the initial hardship is solved. The tutorial also has a real gap problem: several mini-game jobs have no in-game explanation whatsoever, and first-timers will inevitably end up in a guide or a YouTube video before their first week is through. The bigger issue sitting over this whole package is the developer situation. U.Ground Game Studio went silent shortly after launch - social accounts deleted, no further updates delivered. The game remains stuck in Early Access with promised content like expanded storylines, romanceable characters, additional city regions, and more career types never materialising. A full 1.0 release was targeted for 2023 and did not arrive. The Steam page still lists it, reviews across the broader player base skew mixed when accounting for the full review pool, and community posts show players still hoping for a revival years later. That context matters enormously for a purchase decision right now. For what it is - a compact, atmospherically rich urban survival sim rooted in working-class realism, with a genuinely clever needs-management foundation - Nobody - The Turnaround delivers something you will not find many places. The Chinese urban setting, the shader-lit low-income neighbourhoods, the small human details like playing chess with a stranger on a street corner, all of it creates a distinctive texture. The issue is that the game was never finished, and the evidence strongly suggests it will not be. Approach this as a complete-enough experience for roughly four to eight focused hours, not as the sprawling life sim that was promised. Diego, Scout Team
