A passion-project JRPG from a tiny indie studio that wears its Kingdom Hearts influences openly - worth a look if you can forgive rough edges in exchange for genuine heart.

I have a soft spot for the games that almost nobody covers, and Miriel Saga is exactly that kind of project. NG+ Studios built this 3D action RPG from the ground up as what feels like a love letter to the mid-2000s JRPG era, and while the seams show in places, the sincerity underneath them is real. You play as Aleister Sirius, a countryside kid orphaned by war and raised by a woman named Fiora, and the story wastes little time before pulling you into a party of companions who each carry their own distinct weight. Lilluza, a cheerful familiar summoned almost by accident. Naga Edoum, an Evoker whose bluntness masks genuine wisdom. Wendi Viena Ambava IV, an Arcanist from old nobility who is more interesting than her title suggests. Anya Nikita, a Manaless fighter with a chip on her shoulder the size of the southern continent. These four feel like they belong in a game a developer loved first and monetized second. The world of Miriel runs on mana, and the lore around its corruption - a thing called Miasma, sealed away after what the game calls the Age of Darkness - gives the setting a mythological texture that the best JRPGs tend to lean into. Combat is fast-paced and 3D, closer in spirit to an action RPG than a menu-based brawler. You will swap between characters, learn enemy patterns, and optimize gear across your party. The Trust Events system is where the game quietly earns its keep: these are companion-focused story beats designed to let you actually understand who these people are, and for players who are drawn to character-driven RPGs, that system alone justifies the time investment. Here is where honesty is required. Miriel Saga arrived with very little community coverage, almost no press attention, and only a handful of user reviews since release. The developer has pushed post-launch updates covering visual overhauls, added cutscenes, performance fixes, and enemy redesigns, which speaks to commitment but also tells you the game shipped undercooked in some respects. The art style and soundtrack have drawn quiet praise from the small audience that found it, but the production values are firmly in micro-indie territory. If you compare it to the genre giants it clearly admires, the gap is visible. Sidequests each carry their own small storylines, which is an ambition that smaller teams rarely attempt, but execution varies. The honest audience for Miriel Saga is someone who grew up with early-2000s JRPGs, misses that particular warmth of a story told with limited resources and maximum feeling, and is patient enough to meet a small team on their own terms. It is not a replacement for the genre's heavy hitters. What it is, on its better days, is a reminder of why those games mattered in the first place: because someone cared enough to make them.
