A tight, story-first side chapter that drags you back underground into Novosibirsk to play the father your base-game ending only hinted at. Linear, atmospheric, short - and better for all three of those things.

Let me set expectations right away: this is not more Metro Exodus. There are no sprawling semi-open regions, no Aurora to tinker with, no big roaming maps to scan for ammo caches. The Two Colonels strips all of that away and puts you in the boots of Colonel Khlebnikov - a fully voiced, genuinely human character who makes Artyom look like a cardboard cutout by comparison. You are underground, in the dark, in Novosibirsk, and the walls are closing in from the first corridor. On the gameplay side, the loadout is as spartan as the environment. You start with a flamethrower - a new weapon for the series - that doubles as your only light source early on. You can upgrade its pneumatic mechanism and tank size at workbenches, which gives you just enough tinkering to feel engaged without the depth of the base game's crafting. Later chapters hand you a Kalash and an Ashot alongside it, but the weapon roster stays lean across the whole run. The linearity is deliberate and mostly works: tight corridor design ratchets up claustrophobic tension in a way that Exodus' open zones rarely managed. Some critics noted the horror atmosphere is less potent than Metro 2033 or Last Light, and that is fair - the second half tips into straight firefights rather than sustained dread, which feels like a missed opportunity when the environments are this good. The storytelling structure is the real mechanical hook here. The DLC splits across four time stamps - 12, 6, 3, and 1 month before the Aurora arrives - cutting between Khlebnikov's past and Colonel Miller retracing his steps in the present. It is dual-timeline done efficiently, and because Khlebnikov actually talks, the father-son relationship with Kirill lands with real weight. You already know how Novosibirsk ends from the base game, so every quiet moment at that New Year's Eve party carries a built-in dread that no jump scare could replicate. That tragic foreknowledge is the DLC's sharpest tool. The honest problems: runtime is genuinely short at two to three hours depending on difficulty, and some players reported stuttering and occasional crashes on the Steam version at launch. Medkits are generous enough that survival tension takes a back seat, and the crafting loop from Exodus is almost entirely absent. If you came hoping for an expanded shooter experience, you will walk away wanting more trigger time. If you finished the base game and left Novosibirsk feeling like a chapter was missing, this is exactly that chapter. For a shooter specialist like me, this one is not about gunplay mechanics or ranked ladders - there are none. It is about atmosphere and payoff for people invested in 4A's world. The combat serves the story rather than the other way around, and once you accept that, The Two Colonels delivers a punchy, focused, emotionally effective two-to-three hours that most full releases cannot match per-minute. Finish Metro Exodus first. Then come here. Fred, Scout Team
