A faithfully restored 90s 4X classic where you build a wizard empire across two worlds, blending turn-based strategy with deep spell-crafting. Old-school rough edges and all.

Master of Magic Classic is a 4X turn-based strategy game originally from the 1990s, re-released by Slitherine, in which you play as an archmage competing against rival wizards across two interconnected overworld maps - Arcanus and Myrror. You expand cities, recruit fantastical armies, research spells from a massive grimoire, and eventually hunt down enemy wizards before they do the same to you. If that loop sounds familiar, it should: this game is one of the direct ancestors of the Civilization formula, but with magic and monsters baked into the core mechanics rather than bolted on as flavor. The decision-making here runs deep. At the start you pick a wizard portrait, name, and then allocate points across spell books from different schools - Life, Death, Chaos, Nature, Sorcery - each unlocking different unit types, city buildings, and summoning options. Fewer books in a school locks you out of its most powerful spells, so there is a genuine build theory conversation to have before you even place your first city. Retorts (passive abilities like Myrran, which starts you on the harder second plane, or Archmage, which boosts spell skill growth) add another layer of customization that veteran players still argue about. It is the kind of charcter creation that rewards reading guides but also rewards just experimenting across a dozen starts. What works best is the mid-game sprawl. Armies feel meaningfully different depending on your spell books: a Death wizard summons undead that ignore normal morale rules, while a Nature wizard stacks High Men Bowmen buffed with Endurance and Resist Elements. Combat is tile-based and tactical, not just a numbers-comparison screen. AI opponents cast spells during battle, use heroes, and pursue diplomatic or aggressive stances with some personality. The late game does fall into a familiar pattern of snowballing, but the road there rarely feels identical twice. The two-plane design also means you cannot just sit on Arcanus and turtle - Myrror has stronger resources and the other wizards will use it if you ignore it. The rough patches are real and worth naming. The original game shipped with notorious bugs, and this Classic edition is essentially the patched community version rather than a rebuilt remake (the 2022 remake from MuHa Games is a separate product). The UI is dated by any modern standard. Tooltips are sparse, production queues require manual attention every turn in a way that will frustrate anyone coming from Endless Legend or even older Civ titles. The tutorial is minimal - it shows you controls but not strategy - so newcomers should absolutely load up a wiki or a YouTube overview before their first proper run. That said, if you can get past the first few hours, the systems start to feel logical rather than archaic, and the game genuinely respects your intelligence by not holding your hand through every consequence. The mod ecosystem for this Classic version is modest compared to what the 2022 remake has attracted, but several community balance patches and UI mods exist and are worth hunting down on fan sites. For a game of this age and price tier, 97% positive Steam reviews from 750 players is meaningful signal - this is a game people return to, not just a nostalgia purchase that disappoints on replay. If you can stomach the interface and want a fantasy 4X where spell book composition and two-world strategy actually matter, Classic holds up better than it has any right to. Diego, Scout Team
