Forty-plus hours of open-world survival on the back of a motorbike through post-pandemic Oregon - rough around the edges, but the horde encounters alone are worth the price of admission.

My first few hours with Days Gone had me ready to write it off. The bike sputters, the fuel gauge is your real enemy, and Deacon St. John is exactly as prickly and difficult to warm up to as everyone warned. Then a horde of two hundred Freakers poured out of a tunnel and I was on the back foot, burning through molotovs, luring them through a fuel-drum explosion I set up ten minutes earlier without knowing why - and suddenly the game had me. That loop, where the world slowly stops threatening to swallow you whole and starts rewarding your preparation, is what Days Gone does better than almost any open-world game of its generation. At its core this is third-person open-world survival in the Ubisoft mold: clear camps, collect resources, upgrade Deacon's skills and his bike through a progression tree tied to the camps scattered across a beautifully rendered slice of Pacific Northwest wilderness. The motorcycle is both tool and narrative anchor - it needs fuel, it needs repairs, and fast travel between camps actually costs you a tank of gas, which keeps the open road feeling consequential rather than decorative. Combat mixes cover-based shooting, crafting throwables on the fly (molotovs, proximity bombs, noise makers), and melee finishers with improvised weapons. The stealth layer is functional but thin, and the gunplay is loose enough that PC mouse-and-keyboard control genuinely tightens it up compared to the PS4 original. The PC port itself is a genuinely good piece of work - stable frame rates even during the massive horde fights that can stack over a hundred Freakers on screen simultaneously, a proper suite of graphics options, and FOV control. The honest problems are real though. The opening ten to fifteen hours are a slog. Missions repeat their structures with little variation, the action wheel for swapping between throwables and consumables gets genuinely fiddly during horde panic, and the world between encounters can feel sparse. The story is a divisive creature - some players find Deacon's grief-driven arc genuinely moving by the midpoint, others bounce off him completely and never recover. The supporting cast is a mixed bag and the writing never quite escapes its post-apocalyptic TV-drama comfort zone. Critics scored the PC version a Metacritic 76 versus 71 on PS4, which tells the full story: better for being here, but not a clean sweep. Where Days Gone earns its runtime is in those emergent systems doing quiet work. Clear a horde from an area and it stays clear - the world keeps a record. Weather shifts from forest drizzle to mountain snowfall and changes how the bike handles and how Freakers behave. The Survival II difficulty strips away the HUD and cranks the resource scarcity until every camp run feels like a calculated risk. There are over 150 missions in the main plus side content, and completionists can clock north of sixty hours. Post-launch the Broken Roads DLC added a permadeath mode, a speedrun mode, and the Horde Assault wave-survival mode to the PC version, giving returning players fresh reasons to load back in. If you can tolerate a slow start, a protagonist that takes time to earn your patience, and a familiar open-world skeleton, there is a genuinely compelling survival game buried inside Days Gone - one where the bike rides feel lonely in the best possible way and the horde moments are unlike anything else in the genre.
