Dark Rising strips away the filler tower defense usually drowns in. You're managing castle upgrades, training pledges with distinct roles, and building a defensible village layout, mechanics that feel more like a compact strategy game than arcade pattern-matching. The depth comes from figuring out which unit types counter incoming threats and when to prioritize fortifications over army size. It's niche and small-scale, but that's the point: you get a focused tower defense loop without bloat. The weak spot is presentation and pacing. Without Steam reviews or wider coverage, I can't tell how well the tutorial eases you into the build order logic or whether the late-game stays engaging across a full run. For strategy players tired of tower defense's usual throwaway design, it's worth a cautious look, just manage expectations for a seven-year-old indie title with a tiny playerbase.
