Free, cheerful, and over in an afternoon - a conveyor-belt arcade game that earns its cozy seasonal niche without overstaying its welcome.

I have a soft spot for the kind of small, handcrafted release that shows up on Steam in late November with zero fanfare and a clear, unpretentious idea of what it wants to be. Christmas Countdown from solo studio Averrum is exactly that kind of release. It is a top-down, 2D arcade game built around one core loop: presents zip down a conveyor belt and you, playing as one of Santa's elves, must wrap and load them before they tumble off the end. That is the whole game, and it commits to that singular idea with a sincerity that is genuinely refreshing. The structure is five campaign levels, each mapped to one of the final days before Christmas Eve. Pace ramps up level by level in a way that feels deliberate rather than lazy - the early stages let you find your rhythm, and by the later ones the belt is moving fast enough to produce real tension without tipping into cruelty. Once you clear the campaign, an Endless Mode opens up, trading the story framing for a global leaderboard where the goal is simply to outlast everyone else. The score-attack crowd will find more replay here than the casual audience, who will likely dip in, enjoy the novelty, and return only during the holiday season. The pixel art has a cartoony, retro quality that fits the subject matter neatly. Nothing about it is technically ambitious, but the color palette is warm and the North Pole setting has genuine charm. The cheerful Christmas soundtrack does exactly what it should: it stays out of your way on quieter levels and subtly amps the energy as things get frantic. On Steam, early players have responded warmly, with the game sitting at a positive reception rating among its reviews at launch - small sample size, yes, but the sentiment is consistent. People who click on this game are the people it was made for, and they seem to leave satisfied. The honest caveats: this is a short experience. The campaign can be completed in a single sitting, and there is no character progression, no unlockable content, and no multiplayer. Controller support is present, which is a thoughtful touch for a family-focused title, and there are eight Steam Achievements to collect for the completionist crowd. But if you arrive expecting mechanical depth or a multi-hour adventure, you are looking at the wrong shelf. This is a palate cleanser, a something-to-play-while-the-mulled-wine-cools kind of game. The Endless Mode adds a reason to return, but the ceiling of engagement is fairly visible from the start. For a free release with an honest seasonal hook, Christmas Countdown earns its place. It knows its audience, knows its length, and does not try to be something it is not. That kind of quiet self-awareness is worth more than the genre often gives credit for. Kai, Scout Team
