Weird premise, genuine heart: a five-route otome VN that earns its Steam 'Very Positive' rating by putting actual writing where most of the genre puts wallpaper.

I usually live in spreadsheets, but I have a soft spot for games that punch above their budget on writing alone, and Animal Lover is exactly that. Released on Valentine's Day 2017 by the three-person Trainwreck Studios team, it is a roughly five-to-seven-hour otome visual novel with a fixed female protagonist you can name, five romanceable men, and a premise that sounds like a joke until it very much isn't. The setup: you play a vet clinic intern who accidentally un-curses a hamster-shaped former prince by kissing him through his cage bars. That unlocks a hunt for four more men who have been living as animals, some of them for decades or literal centuries. Edmund is the hamster-prince, Frank is a 1950s cat who still hasn't processed the last seventy years of gender politics, Kyle is an anarchist ferret from the 1980s with a light theft habit, Miguel is a 90s-beefcake husky who cooks, and Clarke is a bear who has only been transformed for about a year and is consequently the most grounded of the lot. The time-displacement angle gives each character a distinct voice and, more usefully, a specific emotional wound tied to the years they lost. That is where the game stops being silly and starts being something worth your evening. On the mechanical side, manage your expectations upfront. This is not a choice-heavy branching narrative. There are dialogue options throughout, but the bulk of them shade character tone rather than redirect the plot. Reviewers have counted roughly five or six genuinely consequential decisions across the whole runtime, which works out to about one per hour. If your benchmark for a good VN is something like Ace Attorney-level player agency, you will find this frustrating. If you are comfortable with the reading-experience end of the genre, closer to a light novel than a puzzle game, the slim branch count stops mattering once the writing hooks you. The protagonist, Lucy, is a defined character with her own personality rather than the blank stand-in common in cheaper otome titles, and that choice pays off in the dialogue. Steam community data shows an 88 percent positive rating across over a hundred reviews, which for a micro-budget indie title with no marketing muscle is a real signal. The art sits in a clean, toon-adjacent style with character sprites carrying over thirty visible emotion states, which keeps scenes from feeling static even when the plot slows down. The original soundtrack mixes electronic and acoustic tracks and fits the tonal whiplash between comedy and genuine sadness. The villain, a feminist Wiccan who cursed these men across history, is deliberately ambiguous in her framing, and whether that lands as clever or muddled will depend on your tolerance for stories that refuse to pick a side. Content includes nudity and sexual material per the Steam tags, so check that if it matters to your purchase decision. The game also locks the protagonist gender to female, a deliberate authorial choice the developer has explained in detail, so players hoping for same-sex routes or a male protagonist option will not find them here. For replayability, the achievement list covers multiple endings and the community has a complete guide for completionists. A second full playthrough to chase a different romance requires sitting through shared story content, and at five-plus hours of shared setup before the routes diverge meaningfully, that is a non-trivial time ask. Buy it once, play it once, pick the route that interests you most, and you will get full value. If you loved Hustle Cat or the lighter end of Western otome output and want something with a sharper comic voice than most of the genre manages, this fits neatly into that slot. Diego, Scout Team
