Retro bug-blasting in a grimy 80s bar that plays friendlier on mobile than it does on PC - worth a look only if you want something brainless and brief.

I picked up Anark.io expecting a scrappy little gem hiding beneath its obscurity, and what I found is something more complicated to love: a top-down twin-stick arena shooter built for mobile first, awkwardly transplanted onto PC with a handful of achievements and not a lot else to justify the migration. The setting has charm on paper - you are holed up in an 80s bar fending off a creature invasion called the Insectoids while rival hunters try to steal your hard-won cash - but the atmosphere it gestures at never quite materialises in the way a good genre mood-setter should. The core loop is straightforward: shoot waves of enemies, collect gold, make a deposit before the round ends or lose it, and spend accumulated earnings on unlocking new gear between runs. There are 12 weapons to work through, close to 50 power-ups and upgrades to discover, and 10 playable characters - numbers that sound generous until you realise the loop driving you toward them is thin. The deposit mechanic is the one genuinely interesting wrinkle. Knowing you can lose your run's earnings if you do not bank in time adds a small but real tension to every encounter, and it distinguishes Anark.io from pure wave-survival shooters. Whether that single idea sustains a full PC session is another question. The Steam reception, while tiny in sample size, landed in mixed territory - and that verdict tracks with what the game actually is. On mobile, short sessions and touch controls suit the chaotic pace. On PC with a mouse and keyboard or a controller, the arena feels cramped and the feedback loop of unlocking weapons across short runs feels more like grinding than progressing. The 80s aesthetic is present more as a concept than a committed visual or audio identity - do not expect a synth-soaked soundscape or hand-crafted pixel art that earns your attention the way a game built for this platform might. For players who want a quick, low-commitment shooter to idle through while watching something else, Anark.io has a functional base. The power-up variety gives runs just enough variability to last a few evenings. But anyone hoping for the kind of small, intentional craftsmanship that makes an indie worth returning to - tight controls, a rewarding progression curve, a soundscape that sets the room - will find this one running on fumes pretty quickly. It knows what it is, which is fine. It just does not fully become it. Kai, Scout Team
