FromSoftware's open-world action-RPG drops you into a brutally beautiful world with zero handholding and a George R.R. Martin-shaped lore brain behind it.

Elden Ring is a third-person action-RPG from FromSoftware, the studio behind Dark Souls and Sekiro, now expanded into a massive open world called the Lands Between. If you have bounced off Souls games before because of their corridor-and-bonfire structure, this one is genuinely different. The open field design means that when a boss walls you out, you can ride your spectral horse Torrent across the map and come back harder. That freedom fundamentally changes the frustration curve without softening the combat. The build system is where Elden Ring earns its RPG credentials. You can sculpt a character around Strength and tank hits in heavy armor, stack Dexterity and Arcane for a bleed-focused samurai setup, or go full sorcery and throw comets at dragons from a cliffside while they can't reach you. Ash of War skills let you customize weapon movesets, which means two players running the same weapon type can play completely differently. Past hour 40 the depth only compounds - there are legendary armaments, faith-scaling incantations, and hybrid builds the community is still theorycrafting years after launch. That is the build variety holding up, and then some. The world itself is where George R.R. Martin's mythology work shows. The Lands Between is not a place you read about in item descriptions out of obligation - it is a place you piece together because the fragments are genuinely interesting. Each major region has a demigod ruling it, each demigod has a fractured arc, and the environmental storytelling at sites like Stormveil Castle or the Eternal Cities underground rewards slow exploration far more than any quest marker could. The game trusts you to be curious. That trust is rare. The fair criticisms are real though. The back half of the game leans hard on reusing bosses, and the legacy dungeon quality drops noticeably after the first three or four. Some questlines are so cryptically structured that completing them without a guide is more luck than skill, which undercuts the sense that your choices matter in a meaningful way. There is also no in-game journal, so if you forget where an NPC moved to after a dialogue trigger, that questline is probably gone. For a game with writing this ambitious, those systems feel undercooked. For players who want a challenge-reward loop with genuine mechanical depth, extraordinary art direction, and a world that still has corners the internet argues about, Elden Ring is the clearest answer FromSoftware has ever given. It is not for players who need narrative clarity or quest waypoints. But if you can tolerate opacity in exchange for the feeling of actually discovering something, the Lands Between delivers that consistently. Monika, Scout Team
