Assassin’s Creed Shadows - Pre-Order Bonus (DLC)
Feudal Japan, two playable protagonists, one mixed reception. The pre-order DLC sweetens the base game deal, but the real question is whether Shadows itself earns the buy.

About Assassin’s Creed Shadows - Pre-Order Bonus (DLC)
Assassin's Creed Shadows is Ubisoft Quebec's long-awaited pivot to feudal Japan, and it arrives carrying both genuine ambition and the franchise's usual baggage. You play as two distinct characters: Naoe, a shinobi built around stealth, assassination tools, and grappling traversal, and Yasuke, a historically rooted African samurai who trades subtlety for raw, weighty combat. Swapping between them is not just a cosmetic toggle. Naoe handles the classic Assassin's Creed fantasy - shadow kills, eavesdropping, rooftop parkour - while Yasuke brawls through enemy lines with a moveset that actually feels distinct. That dual-protagonist structure is the most mechanically interesting thing Shadows does, and when it works, the tonal contrast between the two playstyles keeps the pacing alive. The open world is undeniably beautiful. Seasonal cycles change the landscape visually and affect gameplay in small but appreciated ways - tall grass behaves differently in autumn than in spring, and snowfall alters both stealth sightlines and the general atmosphere. The world design rewards exploration for a while, especially early on when feudal castles and rural villages feel genuinely atmospheric. The RPG layer includes skill trees for both protagonists, gear progression, and ability unlocks that let you specialize each character into distinct combat fantasies. Build variety is present and serviceable, though it does not reach the depth that the RPG label might suggest. The problems are familiar if you have played any Ubisoft open-world title in the last decade. The quest design leans heavily on repetitive structure - clear the camp, gather the intel, follow the contact. Filler is abundant, and the main narrative struggles to sustain momentum across the full runtime. The writing has its moments, particularly in scenes that dig into Yasuke's displacement and Naoe's grief, but the dialogue rarely rises to the level that the setting deserves. For a game set during the Sengoku period, one of history's most cinematically rich eras, Shadows too often settles for serviceable storytelling over memorable character work. If you are coming in hoping for CRPG-depth choices or branching consequences, adjust expectations sharply. The pre-order bonus DLC bundled here typically includes cosmetic content - weapon skins, gear sets, or minor story additions depending on the specific pack. It is worth confirming exactly what is included before weighing it into your purchase decision, since pre-order bonuses in this franchise vary in substance. None of it is likely to change the fundamental experience of the base game, but cosmetic additions in a game with strong visual presentation are not nothing. The Steam review score sitting at Mixed (76% positive across a very large sample) tells you this is a polarizing release rather than a consensus hit - longtime fans frustrated by franchise fatigue versus players genuinely charmed by the Japan setting and dual-protagonist hook. Shadows is a game that does several things well enough to be enjoyable, and a few things well enough to be genuinely impressive, but never quite assembles those pieces into something that transcends the formula. If feudal Japan is your dream setting and you can tolerate Ubisoft's open-world habits, Naoe and Yasuke will keep you busy for dozens of hours. If you are hoping the RPG label means deep systemic reactivity or writing that rewards a second run, this is not that game. Monika, Scout Team
