Free-to-play and genuinely alive after eight years, but walk in knowing you are joining a platform, not booting up a game with a clear win condition.

I have spent enough hours in social MMO platforms to know which ones feel like ghost towns after two months, and VRChat is not one of them. Eight years on Steam, still technically in early access, and somehow pulling record concurrent numbers. That alone makes it worth paying attention to. The core loop here is user-generated everything. Worlds are built by the community using the VRChat SDK with Unity and Udon, the platform's own visual scripting language, and the range is absurd. Escape rooms, zero-gravity go-kart tracks, full battle-royale instances, horror worlds, working versions of board games, nightclub venues with live DJ sets and full-body tracking dancers. The worlds tab is closer to a game library than a single game map. Avatars run on the same logic: custom 3D models with lip sync, eye tracking, and hand motion support, with a trust-rank system gating who can upload their own content. New accounts start restricted, which is smart moderation, but it does make the first few hours feel slightly sterile. The monetization picture is layered but not punishing for a casual user. VRChat Plus (VRC+) is a subscription that adds avatar favorites slots, profile pictures, custom emojis, and UI theming. Nothing gameplay-critical, but if you invest in a specific avatar identity, you will feel the slot limits without it. The 2025 creator economy marketplace added VRChat Credits as a transactional layer, letting creators sell avatars and worlds directly in-platform. Healthy for creators, and it finally gives serious builders a reason to stay. Whether that marketplace avoids the predatory patterns that killed games like Wildstar and Landmark is still being established, so keep an eye on how the economy matures. The honest criticisms land in two places. First, discovery is rough. The worlds search is functional but not inspired, and without a friend group already in-platform you will spend a lot of time portaling through mediocre lobbies before you hit something memorable. Second, desktop mode is a second-class citizen. Without a VR headset you lose free limb movement, many two-handed interactions, and a fair amount of the presence that makes the platform worth the time investment. Cross-platform play with Quest users works, but world and avatar compatibility between PC and Android builds is not automatic, which creates friction when your crew is on mixed hardware. If you already have a VR headset or a tight friend group willing to commit to a regular session, VRChat has more going on than anything else in its lane. If you are a solo desktop user with no existing community here, expect a slow, occasionally awkward on-ramp before it clicks. Yuki, Scout Team
