Four-player split-screen drift chaos with the soul of a '90s SEGA arcade cab - absurdly approachable, occasionally shallow, and perfect for a couch session with friends.

My first thought when the opening race loaded up was: who greenlit something this joyful in 2024? Victory Heat Rally is a 2.5D arcade racer built from the bones of classic SEGA super-scaler titles like OutRun and Power Drift, filtered through a pixel-art lens that is loud, colourful, and genuinely charming. Skydevilpalm - a two-person indie studio out of Las Vegas - spent years crowdfunding and crafting this thing, and the love shows in every frame. The core loop is built entirely around drifting. Tap the dedicated drift button going into a corner, hold it through the apex, and you charge a three-stage boost meter that fires your car out the other side at escalating speeds. It clicks fast - newcomers to arcade racers will feel competent within a few laps, which is exactly what you want when four people are crammed around a monitor on a Saturday night. The Championship mode structures progression through three tiers, each containing multiple Cups that build toward a Grand Prix finale. Sally McRally hosts the whole thing like a TV broadcast, interviewing rival drivers and adding genuine personality between races. The campaign runs roughly four to six hours depending on skill level, and beating rivals recruits them to your roster, unlocking their cars and paint options for every mode. There are also Arcade Grand Prix, Time Trial, and a local Versus mode rounding out the package. For a couch multiplayer crowd, the four-player split-screen Versus mode is the headline act. No online racing exists, which is a legitimate limitation for solo players who want ranked competition, but local play feels exactly as chaotic and fun as it should. Ramming a lapped opponent hard enough to send them airborne and exploding off the track never really gets old, and the auto-acceleration option means less coordinated players can focus entirely on drifting and laughing at each other rather than wrestling with throttle control. The twelve unique environments - ranging from beach circuits to icy tundra tracks - keep the visual variety high enough that sessions do not feel repetitive during a single sitting. Where the game shows its seams is in depth and audio. The drift controls have a looseness that divides players - some find it liberating, others find it imprecise, particularly in the target-hitting challenge events where tighter handling would help. The sound design drew criticism across multiple reviews: engine noise is basically absent during races, leaving the soundtrack to carry all the atmosphere on its own, which it does adequately but not remarkably. And once the Championship is done, the replay hook outside of split-screen is thin. There are no weapons, no online leaderboards to chase meaningfully, and the Time Trial mode is pleasant but narrow in scope. For what it is, Victory Heat Rally earns its Very Positive reception on Steam honestly. It is a low-barrier, high-fun arcade racer that absolutely delivers for casual groups and retro racing fans, even if committed sim players or anyone hunting for deep progression mechanics will bounce off it quickly. If your crew has fond memories of SEGA Rally or Ridge Racer - or just wants something everyone can pick up and play before anyone finishes their first drink - this one delivers the goods without asking much in return.
