Roughly 200 hours of Star Wars story that you can play entirely solo - and it won't cost you a cent to find out if it hooks you.

I have a complicated history with MMOs - most of them lose me the moment the story stops and the gear treadmill begins. SWTOR kept me glued because it does something almost no other MMO bothers to do: it treats its writing as the main attraction. The game is set roughly 3,600 years before the films, deep in Star Wars Legends lore, and the distance from the Skywalker saga gives the writers room to breathe. Sith empires, Republic intrigue, bounty hunter codes of honor - this is old-school Star Wars mythology at its most confident. The architecture of the game is built around eight distinct origin classes: Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler, Trooper on the Republic side, and Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Bounty Hunter, and Imperial Agent for the Empire. Each class carries its own fully voiced, BioWare-style narrative arc that runs 30 to 60 hours from the starter planet through Act III. The light-side/dark-side choice system threads through every class, and your decisions earn alignment points that nudge companions toward or away from you, making repeat playthroughs on alternate classes feel meaningfully different rather than just reskinned. Companion relationships - think Theron Shan or Lana Beniko - are genuinely well written, and the Date Night companion missions added in recent updates give even veteran players new character moments worth logging in for. That said, the MMO skeleton underneath the story coat is showing its age. Combat runs on a cooldown-rotation model that felt familiar in 2011 and feels positively creaky now - you will spend real time staring at ability timers during solo questing, and the filler quests that pad out planetary content are exactly as tedious as you fear. The free-to-play tier is workable for story content, but the restrictions pile up fast: credits are capped, higher-tier gear is locked, and flashpoints become limited. A subscription unlocks expansions from Knights of the Fallen Empire through Legacy of the Sith, which is where the post-base-game story lives. Broadsword, who took over development in 2023, has kept a steady cadence of roughly four updates a year - story patches, Galactic Seasons tracks, and PvP seasons - though community feedback is clear that individual story updates tend to be short. The server population has stabilized rather than grown, which means group content like Operations requires some patience or an active guild. For the RPG player who primarily cares about voiced story, alignment choices, companion arcs, and exploring a rich corner of the Star Wars universe, SWTOR remains one of the deepest wells available anywhere on PC. The graphics engine is dated, the combat will frustrate anyone raised on action RPGs, and hardcore MMO players chasing endgame progression will hit a ceiling. But if you approach it the way BioWare originally intended - as a collection of eight single-player RPGs that share a galaxy - there are genuinely hundreds of hours of content here without spending a dollar, and the writing on the Imperial Agent storyline alone is worth the download.
