If you have three friends and a couch, or three friends online and a working night, this beat-em-up earns its cult status. Solo, it's a grind that will test your patience before it rewards it.

I came into this one expecting pure nostalgia bait and left with more appreciation than I predicted, but also a clearer picture of exactly who should buy it and who should pass. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game - Complete Edition is a side-scrolling brawler rooted firmly in the River City Ransom tradition: light RPG progression, persistent character levels, shops between waves, and a difficulty curve that does not apologize. Seven playable characters - Scott, Ramona, Kim Pine, Stephen Stills, Knives Chau, Wallace Wells, and the unlockable NegaScott - each carry their own movesets that expand level by level up to a cap of 16, with new combos unlocking through XP gain and stat upgrades purchased at in-stage stores using coins dropped by enemies. There is also a Guts Points system that lets you pop a revive or burn meter to summon assist characters mid-fight, which adds a small layer of resource management on top of the bashing. The co-op is where the whole thing clicks. Up to four players locally or online, with a combined taunt mechanic that fires off a band attack when everyone activates it at the same time - that kind of stuff rewards a coordinated group and gives the game a social energy that solo runs simply cannot replicate. The Complete Edition bundles in the Knives Chau and Wallace Add-On Packs, Boss Rush, a Survival Horror horde mode against waves of zombies, Dodgeball, and Battle Royale PvP. That is a solid content package. Online worked well enough in most reported sessions, though occasional bugs - including at least one level-halting issue noted at launch - suggest the netcode has never been fully polished. Community guides on Steam point to ongoing friction with Ubisoft's infrastructure, so account for that going in. The difficulty is the real conversation here. Solo, the early stages will body you repeatedly if you have not grinded your character's stats to a survivable threshold. The reliance on EXP farming before the mid-game becomes manageable is not a design quirk that has aged gracefully. The limited life count, the full level restart on game over, and the punishing enemy aggression all feel like they belong to a specific era of arcade philosophy. Cheat codes help cut the grind - the Sword of Love code is still active and worth knowing - but the Complete Edition quietly removed a couple of the original exploits, which will frustrate veterans trying to speedrun. The presentation, though, is genuinely exceptional for what it is. Paul Robertson's pixel animation is dense, expressive, and still holds up against anything being produced in the style today. The Anamanaguchi soundtrack, a chiptune-rock hybrid using actual Game Boy hardware alongside guitars and drums, is one of the better game soundtracks of its generation and the reason alone some people will hit purchase. Each of the seven levels has a distinct visual theme tied to the evil ex you are hunting down, and the environments stay readable even when the screen gets busy with multiple players and enemies overlapping. If you are approaching this without any attachment to the comics or the Edgar Wright film, the game leans harder on nostalgia than it does on mechanics innovation - Streets of Rage 4 would serve a first-timer better as a standalone brawler experience. But if you have a regular co-op crew, a fondness for the source material, or both, the Complete Edition is the definitive way to play it. Fred, Scout Team
