The lawn defense classic returns, patched into decent shape after a rough launch - worth it for newcomers and nostalgia runs, less so if you already own the GOTY edition.

I want to like Replanted more than I actually do, and that tension is the whole story here. The original Plants vs. Zombies is genuinely one of the tightest lane-based tower defense games ever made - the five-row grid, the sun economy, the pacing of zombie wave escalation, all of it still holds up sixteen years later. Replanted does not break that. The core Adventure mode runs its 50 levels across five distinct areas exactly as you remember, and the difficulty is left largely untouched. What it adds on top is real: a local co-op mode where two players take on split roles, a local PvP Versus mode where one player controls the zombies, a permadeath hardcore mode called Rest in Peace that gives you one lawn mower per level placed in a random row, and Cloudy Day mode, which cuts off sun generation periodically and forces you to squeeze more out of every placement decision. Puzzle modes Vasebreaker and I, Zombie return, nearly twenty minigames come back, and a post-launch patch added Survival: Endless variants for all five areas rather than just the daytime pool. On paper, this is the fullest PvZ package that has ever shipped. The quality-of-life additions deserve specific credit. The 2.5x game speed toggle is the single best thing about this release - waiting on sun trickle in the early lanes was always the slowest part, and being able to blast through at speed without missing the strategy layer is exactly right. The Sun Magnet collects sun icons in bulk, PC players get number key hotkeys for seed selection, and widescreen with up to 4K support finally drags the game out of its old 800x600 box. These are the right calls. Here is where it gets messy, though. The launch state was genuinely rough. Bugs hit save data, achievement tracking, Zen Garden progression, and at one point the game required an always-on internet connection just to run - not great for a single-player title. Multiple patches across versions 1.2 through 1.5 fixed most of the critical issues, and the dynamic music system, which was absent at launch, was restored in patch 1.3. The Steam user score settled around 63% positive overall, though recent reviews trend closer to 78% - a clear sign that the post-launch patching did real work. Still, some players report UI inconsistencies, rough card sprites that were never properly updated to HD, and art direction that flattened some of the bold linework that made the original pop. The original development team flagged that some concept art in the new gallery was not sourced from original creators, which added a layer of frustration for anyone paying attention. None of this kills the game, but none of it inspires confidence that every corner got the attention it deserved. If you have never played the original, skip the GOTY edition on Steam and start here - you get local multiplayer, all the modes, the speed toggle, and widescreen support for a reasonable entry point. If you are a returning player, the honest answer is that the new modes and QoL features are genuinely good, but the launch stumbles and some uneven visual polish mean this is not the definitive edition it was marketed as being. It is a solid one, post-patches, with enough extra content to justify a run through. Fred, Scout Team
