I have spent enough time watching VR headset owners dust off their kit for exactly one game, and Pavlov is almost always that game. Vankrupt Games started this as a solo-developer project back in 2017 and built it into the most-played VR shooter on PC, hitting full release in December 2024 after years in early access. The core pitch is deceptively simple: take the rhythm of Counter-Strike, map every reload, mag swap, and weapon cock to your actual hands in physical space, and throw you into tight round-based maps. The result lands harder than any flatscreen shooter has a right to. The gunplay is the whole deal here. Every weapon in the roster of over 65 guns requires manual reloading, meaning you physically pull the magazine, seat a fresh one, and rack the slide. Modern pistols, bolt-action rifles, WWII-era weapons including operable tanks in the Stalingrad mode - each handles differently and demands muscle memory you will not have on day one. New players will fumble reloads at the worst possible moments. Experienced players will do it without thinking while sprinting through a doorway. That gap between rookie and veteran is steep but satisfying to climb. A practice range and killhouse exist specifically to blunt the learning curve, and the built-in tutorial walks through the basics at your own pace. Mode variety does real work here. Search and Destroy runs like a straight CS clone with bomb plant and defuse objectives. King of the Hill, Deathmatch, and Gun Game cover the casual end. TTT (Trouble in Terrorist Town) is the social highlight - a murder mystery where traitors blend with innocents, proximity voice chat does all the chaos management, and a well-timed accusation in the right lobby will have everyone screaming. The Zombies co-op mode scratches a different itch, though it has been fairly criticized for lacking progression or escalating difficulty; it is a blast for one or two sessions but the walls close in fast without any upgrade loop to chase. The Hide, an asymmetrical mode pitting one cloaked monster against an armed task force, is a genuinely weird wildcard worth trying with a full group. The stuff that does not work as well: there is no meaningful player progression system. No ranked ladder, no cosmetic unlocks tied to play time. The recent reviews on Steam sat at mixed territory around launch, with some players flagging performance concerns and the absence of long-term reward hooks. Toxic lobbies are a real variable - the community skews toward sweaty regulars in competitive modes, so landing in a Search and Destroy match as a brand-new player can feel punishing. The mod ecosystem on PC is legitimately excellent and extends the game's life enormously through Steam Workshop, but that depth takes time to discover. Motion sickness comfort options (vignette, adjustable locomotion settings) exist and help, though Pavlov is smooth locomotion only with no teleport fallback, so VR newcomers should budget some adjustment time. For the right person - someone already into VR with a decent play space, a group of friends on voice chat, and patience for a learning curve - this is exactly the kind of game that ends up with three hundred hours on it before you notice. Solo players without a regular squad will burn through the appeal faster. The PC version's mod support and community server infrastructure keep servers populated and the content fresh in ways the console versions simply cannot match.
