A sprawling action-RPG with fluid combat and ridiculous build freedom, remastered and bundled with its DLC. Old-school open world that still hits different.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is an action-RPG originally developed by Big Huge Games and 38 Studios, remastered by KAIKO and re-released with the Fatesworn expansion included in this FATE Edition. If you missed it the first time around, the pitch is simple: take an open world roughly the size of a small Elder Scrolls game, fill it wall-to-wall with lore written by R.A. Salvatore, art direction by Todd McFarlane, and then hand the player a combat system that feels closer to a character action game than a traditional RPG. The result is something that, even now, feels genuinely distinct from the usual fantasy RPG crowd. The core loop revolves around the Fateless One, a protagonist resurrected through a magical device called the Well of Souls, who is now completely unbound from the predetermined fate that governs every other living creature in the world. Mechanically, that translates to a surprisingly deep class system built around three skill trees - Might, Finesse, and Sorcery - which you can mix and match freely using Destiny Cards. You want a sword-swinging mage who occasionally vanishes into shadow? That is a real, functional build. A chakram-hurling rogue who buffs themselves with storm spells? Also completely viable. The build variety here holds up well past the first twenty hours, which is saying something given how long the game actually is. Combat is where Re-Reckoning earns its keep. It is fast, combo-driven, and tactile in a way that a lot of RPGs are not. Dodging, timing, and weapon-switching matter. The Reckoning mode, triggered when a special meter fills, lets you slow time and execute enemies for bonus XP, which is a genuinely satisfying power fantasy loop. Where the game struggles is in the broader quest design. The main story is fine - coherent, even occasionally interesting given the fate-versus-free-will thematic backbone - but the sheer volume of side quests ranges from meaningful faction storylines to "go kill twelve of this enemy type" filler that would make even a patient player sigh. The world is enormous, and not every corner of it was filled with equal care. The remaster itself is competent rather than transformative. Improved textures, better performance, and updated lighting do the job. This FATE Edition bundles in the Fatesworn expansion, which adds a new region and continues the story, giving completionists a meaningful chunk of additional content. The RPG systems around skills like Blacksmithing, Sagecrafting, and Alchemy add depth to gear progression that reward players who engage with them rather than treating them as optional noise. For players who want a narrative RPG that rewards re-reading lore entries and theorycrafting builds, Amalur sits in an interesting middle space. It is not as dialogue-rich or choice-reactive as a Larian game, and the world does not feel as alive as something from Obsidian. But if you want fluid combat wrapped in genuinely interesting mythology, with enough build customization to keep a min-maxer occupied for sixty-plus hours, Re-Reckoning delivers that package cleanly. Just go in knowing you will hit stretches of repetitive questing and you will have a much better time than if you expect every side quest to have the weight of a main story beat. Monika, Scout Team
