Solid digital port of the childhood classic, with Commanders Mode adding real tactical wrinkles - but the online player pool is thin enough to make you question the multiplayer pitch.

I came to this one expecting five minutes of nostalgia before uninstalling, and I stayed longer than I should have admitted. Hasbro's Battleship on PC is a clean, functional conversion of the board game, and it does what it needs to do without embarrassing itself. Classic Mode is exactly what it sounds like: grid, ships, blind guessing, first fleet sunk loses. No surprises, no complaints. Commanders Mode is where the real question mark sits. Each commander brings a historically themed fleet with non-standard ship shapes and a signature special ability tied to a resource meter. Commander Schmidt can fire a torpedo that travels along a full row or column until it hits something. Ferrara's Italian fleet unleashes a 3x3 bombardment in one shot. Wade's canons target five cells simultaneously, and the French commander's surgical strike can sink an entire ship in a single hit. These abilities add a second layer of decision-making per turn - when to fire the special, how to bait your opponent into a bad position before deploying it. The mode actually earns the word "tactical" in a way the base game doesn't. Steam reviews sit at 82% positive across roughly 800 ratings, which is a fair reflection: people who expected a fun time got one, and people who expected more got reminded this is a board game port. On the technical side, the presentation is cleaner than it has any right to be. Hand-drawn commander art, per-fleet ship illustrations, and historical arenas inspired by real naval engagements give it personality. The AI on Easy is brain-dead, Medium is acceptable, Hard plays more logically. The AI response time is fast - no staring at a loading spinner waiting for the opponent to "think". Online PvP exists but community threads suggest the player pool is not exactly thriving, with some players reporting long waits or getting matched against bots without warning. There is no turn timer by default either, which creates the odd problem of opponents simply parking in a game and doing nothing. The mission and rank system gives solo players a reason to grind - earn medals, level up, unlock commanders and arenas. Completion time for the main progression loop sits around five hours, so do not expect a long campaign. The challenge structure gates some late missions behind online play, which feels like a friction point for anyone who bought this purely for offline sessions. There are also additional commanders and arenas sold as premium content, which has generated some friction with users who paid upfront and did not expect a secondary spend to round out the roster. If you are looking for a quick digital fix of the classic game - something to set up with a friend over voice chat on a lazy evening - this delivers that reliably. If you came hoping for a ranked competitive scene with a healthy online ladder, adjust expectations now. This is a well-executed licensed port, not a live-service PvP title. Fred, Scout Team
